Looking for a Reviewer/Blogger

So the second Issue of The Gamer went off really well and as a result we are growing rapidly. I am looking for another reviewer to join our team...

You will be given atleast one title per month to review, probably more.
You will also be required to make blog posts everyday.

Anyone is welcome to apply
Write a 600 word mini synopsis on a new release and send it to [email protected]

Thanks
Abe

May I offer you some constructive advice?

There are ten grammatical errors in the quoted text, and one broken metaphor.

When you're producing and promoting written content of any sort, it's important to ensure a high standard of quality. To be perfectly honest, I've no interest in reading a magazine full of errors. You really need to find someone who is a competent copy editor to take care of this.

You volunteering Azi?

Thanks for the advice :) For now we are doing this all on our own and we are doing the best we can.
The first issue was riddled with errors and I have been given many compliments that issue 2 has come a long way.
I dont expect to be perfect out the box, but I know in time we will get there :)

ps what is the broken metaphor?

So because someone else said it first, it's okay? I see people everywhere writing "your" instead of "you're". Doesn't make it right. :P

Conceptually, it just doesn't make sense to "clock" a physical quantity of something.

And you're the only one who cares. I think that most would agree that clock in has come to refer to time or quantity in modern conversation or writing.

And it's become almost acceptable to write "could care less" when you mean "couldn't care less". You know, exactly the opposite. People should stop and think about what they're actually writing.

And I daresay I'm not the only one who cares. Anyone who cares about language cares about this stuff. And everybody should care about language. It's how we make sense of the world around us.

I don't really care about language all that much, but having spent 4 years of my life studying Language Practice I also notice most of these common mistakes that people make every day. I am even guilty of some of these transgressions myself. Most of the time I just ignore them, but there are some that really irritate me to no end. An example of this would be the (erroneous) Afrikaans expressions "Ek doen" or "Ek doen nie" that I hear on almost a daily basis. I almost always want to ask them "Wat doen jy?" :p
I assume people use it in the same sense as the English "I do" and "I don't", but it sounds so horrible.

Something can clock in at 48 hours, but not 48 pages. ;P

I've seen you use l33tsp34k in articles all the time, possibly the greatest slap with a penis in the face to the English language since my Afrikaans friend wrote Shakespearean fanfiction.

Indeed, and culture is the means through which we interpret language so provided the majority understand your meaning and find it to be socially acceptable, your incorrect use of a term is in fact culturally correct.

Proper English usage is what separates us from animals, savages, and George Bush. It's even more important for any sort of publication, especially if you're an online start-up competing with more established printed mags.

A small bit of professionalism goes a long way.

I think that culture is what separates us from the beasts with language only being a single facet of culture. Culture includes creative expression, traditions, order and literary and numeric systems. But a publication does require a professional air in order to be successful.

Actually, reading the quote made my eye twitch as well. :(

I have to agree with ThunderAxe once again, even though I'm really stoked at Abev's efforts and enthusiasm in the gaming media industry. He should see it as helpful tips to being even more awesome.

Agreed.

When I receive emails from my bank or other professionals with whom I work, I lose any and all respect for them. I'm not a native English speaker and if I can put in minimal effort then so can others.

+1

I think the mag is looking rad and it's obvious that a lot of effort has been put into it, but it never hurts to have a Grammar Nazi on your staff.

Thanks for all the input guys.
That quoted text is from issue one and as I already mentioned we have been congratulated on Issue 2 being much better.
I know its not 100% here, but we will get there.

Please can we keep this thread related to the topic at hand?
I need another reviewer/blogger and everyone being negative about grammar is just derailing the thread.
