Looking for advice on where best to buy laptops

I'm helping my dad out in finding a decent deal on some laptops as he is looking to get one for himself and one for my sister.

While I'm pretty clued up on PC components in the desktop arena, I'm not very experienced with what's a decent deal for a laptop (it seems that compact convenience comes at a price).

The budget for the 2 laptops is R12k at max so ideally R6k each. My sister is quite clear that she wants something with 8GB of memory. I'd like to see if I can squeeze in an i5 if possible. The laptops will be used for general office tasks and in my sister's case managing her website - so something that can handle multimedia without slowing down too much.

Anyone have a preferred retailer that they get their laptops from?

I also had a look on carbonite and there's a chance to get more bang for buck there, I'm guessing that the resellers there are a safe bet at the very least? Flex you've had experience there right?

Unless you get an i5 second hand or refurbish you will be hard pressed getting it for under 8k.
Can't they save up a bit more and get i5 rather.

I worked on an i3 and I killed it and it was just opening a few windows (windows 8). Got my laptop from Wootware i5 and happy with it but also payed 10k for it since I knew I did not want an i3 so saved for a year to get it.

As much as I hate the high prices from incredible connection they sometimes have great deals on decent laptops so pop in there now and again and see what they have.

Only new or Second hand?

Step 1 - talk them out of the laptop idea. At that price range you'll only get crap, while on a desktop you have a decent chance at reasonable performance.

Still - if you insist:

Scrap the i5 idea. Not happening.

Shoot for i3 with SSD - better overall perceived speed even if you cut corners elsewhere. The sht 5400 drives on the cheap laptops are the biggest problem IMO.

idk...my parents got an IC laptop in that price range and it was slit-wrist level slow.

New- Evetech usually have quite good specials. Just note that their client support is not of the best

Second hand- Carbonite

Thanks for the advice!

I had a look at my sister's current laptop (i3, 2GB memory, 500GB hdd) and saw that the ram can easily be upgraded as well as the hdd so a small upgrade to 2x4GB and possibly an SSD should get the performance she's looking for without breaking the bank.

My dad has a decent desktop that I helped him setup a few years ago, it's the mobility he wants as he's doing a fair bit of substitute teaching so he's wanting a laptop that he can take with him to work. I don't think it has to do too much heavy lifting so an entry level model should be sufficient - I'll check out the options on Evetech.

Try looking for a Tablet/Laptop thing. I got one for my mate who is a personal trainer. He used to run around with a tablet and a laptop. Now he has this Tablet/Laptop hybrid. It runs windows 10 and is a laptop when it's in the keyboard dock. Works for him as he has the mobility of a tablet but a keyboard and touchpad for WHEN he needs it to be more of a laptop

Ok cool, I will have a look at those.

OP asked for "TWO" laptops at a price of "R12K" not a "R24K" gaming laptop.

BTW OP if you are in the East Rand area check out Makro at carnival they are clearing out last gen stock. I got a ASUS laptop i5 6200 4gb DDR4 and 1tb Hdd at R8000 granted it is above what you asked but they are a ton more available that are around the R7k range

Thanks for the responses. We decided to upgrade my sister's laptop with some ram - just done 4GB to start because she's still on 32-bit OS. Will get another 4GB stick and upgrade to Win 10 64bit if she needs more speed.

Got this from Loot - Asus K541UA-GQ591T 15.6" Core i5 Notebook - Intel Core i5-7200U, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM, Windows 10 while it was marked down to R7500
So it seems like it was a decent deal.
