Looking for immersive multiplayer goodness

So I have been jamming ARMA II mod DayZ and it's been great fun, but looking for something else till the Standalone comes along.
Thing I liked about DayZ was the awesome free roam survival thing with a HUGE sandbox map. Just waste hours jamming that. Need me a new game for December.

I'm all WoW'd out before someone recommends MMORPGs :p And not necessarily looking for a simple 8 hour co-op FPS either. Just not a clue what is out there , Preferably looking for internet/LAN option games. Steam or anywhere else I could get it is great, just want something super immersive and multiplayer (2+ players) for the December period :)
Any recommendations would be very much appreciated, and out of the norm games would be good too :D

Torchlight 2, L4D2, Planetside 2, Trine 2

(it is pure coincidence that they are all squeals)

EDIT: also Saints Row - The Third

Feel kind of rpg'd out too with D3, but have played some of the TL2 co-op till level 18. It's good times. not as immersive, hack and slash dungeon crawling.

Actually own all those games haha (Well owning PlanetSide 2 for "free"), other than Saints Row, gonna get that with the humblebundle special :D Is that good times co-oping the campaign with a friend?

I enjoy it. imagine playing GTA with your mate, but with more madness and profanity :D

Planetside 2, MMOFPS? How does that work with international latency? And heard it can be sometimes "pay to win" even though developers stressed it wouldn't be.
