Looking for the Best Story based RPG's

Once you've gone through "the best" you settle for whatever you can get your grubby paws on :p

Extra +1s for:

Jade Empire
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2,
Gothic 1/2/3
Divine Divinity/Beyond Divinity/Divinity 2: Developer's Cut

There are others too, but it's difficult to know what would really interest you. It's also difficult just saying, "Cor, yeah, this one's the best!" because I like to think of RPGs as "unique" experiences and what I'd find "the best" would largely be because of the plot, characters, atmosphere, etc and that would be Planescape: Torment, which you've played.

If you haven't played Jade Empire though, put it at the top of your list. It's one of BioWare's truest classics.

I know this might be somewhat controversial but have you thought about Dark Souls and Dark Souls II.

A lot of people think there isn't much of a story line, granted there isn't but the beauty of it is the story is open ended and allows the player to sort of piece it together themselves. Lately I have reading up a shit load on the lore of Dark Souls and the depth of the story and characters is just outstanding! Really worth looking into if I were you. And each time you play it, you discover new things and new ideas of how this might be connected to that. Ag I could ramble on for hours on this matter, truly immersive.

All of the replies here are really great!

Hi BeoTek, I thought about getting into Dark Souls, and one of my closer friends highly recommends it, but it's hard to get past the consistent "This Game was built for the hardcore and it's shining brilliance of a combat system" which doesn't say a lot of it's story, so I have been sceptical about it, But I may just add it in the list for it's depth of atmosphere.

While you all reinstall Bloodlines, I think I am going to reinstall Jade Empire. :p

Haven't played it in ages and I've always wanted a sequel. Really hope Bioware look into giving us one. Most definitely in my top 3 Bioware games along with Neverwinter Nights and KOTOR.

EDIT: Came across a mod now that adds a lot of combat styles to the game, now I am really excited to play it again. :D

You sadistic bastard....share the link!! :wtf: :D

I followed the development, then lost track as I couldn't get hold of it in SA. A couple years ago I got it on STEAM, couldn't get it to work, saw lots of ppl with issues and left it. Think its time I try it again.

I've tried time and again to get into Jade Empire, but I simply cannot. I think it's just the setting that I find a little off-putting. Never been a big fan of medieval asian themes.

Lycanthrope why you no mention Risen? Thought I could trust you to do your job properly :p

I did say that there were others :p But you're right, I'm terrible T.T

I blame Risen 2, that game put me right off. Although, still very much looking forward to Risen 3, come August. BRING BACK MY FIRE MAGICIAN! Erm... Inquisitor <.<

Apologies. Here you go: http://www.moddb.com/mods/jade-empire-in-style/downloads/jade-empire-in-style-english

About to start playing as soon as I've installed the mod. Download is really small at least, like 13mb.

I just want them to take away the island thing where monsters are limited to islands. I loved being able to to stumble in to trolls or just low level enemies. hate the way it was done in Risen 2 and Arcania.
