Looking to make my PC a little more silent

I'm in the market for a new PSU, so I though while I'm at it I might as well look into some ways to make my PC a bit more quieter. I sit very close to it, so I guess that I'll always hear some noise, but it's starting to get to a level where it annoys me.

  • Coolermaster Storm Scout with the 3 stock fans (140mm on top, 140mm in the front, 120mm in the rear. I've actually disconnected two of them because they are way too loud, my temps are absolutely fine without them)
  • Stock Intel CPU cooler for my i5 (2nd Gen)
  • Huntkey Greenpower 550w PSU

Obviously, my best bet would be to replace the stock fans with some silent ones, get a quieter CPU cooler and replace the PSU. (which I'm going to have to do anyway because I plan on upgrading to a R9-270X in two weeks; need more 6 pins :D). Should I maybe get a fan controller as well?

Any suggestions as to which products I should buy would be much appreciated :)

Maybe one of those be quiet! PSU's and some Noctua fans? Doing some research, that's what a lot of people recommend.

I've had good luck with my corsair GS800 PSU. The fan is off 99% of the time. Its off unless the ambient temp is so warm that its uncomfortable.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that series of Corsair's :)

Anyone have any advice about CPU coolers and fans?

Also, what are people's thoughts on Sound Dampening Foam?

I’ve been using a Noctua NH-C14 for the past 3 years now and can confirm it’s one of the quietest CPU coolers out there, even running on max. The cooler was originally installed on my AMD Phenom II X3 720 OC to 3.7Ghz and it never exceeded past 55 degrees.

It’s currently installed on my i7 4770k OC to 4.4 GHz and the highest temps I’ve seen running OCCT 4.4.0 were 74 degrees (60min test, 90% memory usage). I originally planned to buy their NH-D14 which supposedly keeps the CPU even cooler but they were out of stock at the time.

Noctua also make some very quiet case fans, but I currently have 4 x Aerocool shark coolers (1700rpm) which can be loud, I control them using a Aerocool V12XT fan speed controller and run them at 1000rpm.

For the PSU, I’m using a Corsair AX850 and as HavocXphere said, Corsair PSU’s run really quiet and I would highly recommend them.

As for the R9 270X, I have two MSI Gaming Radeon R9 270X OC to 1150 MHz on the Core and 1550 MHz (6200 MHz) on the memory and they perform very well and are whisper quiet even under load.
