Lord of the Rings Online

Wow. LOTRO is free? AWESOME!!!!!
Can anybody give a proper link so that I can get my tiny 384kb/s adsl to download that mofo.
I'm so damn keen on a good RPG you wont understand, but I don't have the money to buy a game.
I don't get a lot of time to play games these days, but I will be sure to give this a good bash.

Yup, its pretty much 70.99% free! you can download it from the WAGE FTP but as somebody already mentioned, its a little outdated but i believe that the content for both the expansion packs are included.

Join Evernight! :p

Im busy downloading it from lotro.com . It's 10458mb. Does that include the expansion packs aswell?
It's going very slowly. Estimated time remaining is jumping a lot but it seems to be around 120hours. (Which is FOREVER)

Cyrokrypto, what do you mean by 70.99% free?
I don't want to waste my time if I can't play this without paying money out of my pocket.

Id appreciate the opinion of someone who's played this ,
I am a ex-WoW addict , got bored out of my mind.
For someone whos played both , how does this stack against it ?
In terms of both graphics , questing , endgame and pvp ?
Also id like to hear someone's oppinion on the classes , are they very balanced or are there some issues in this regard ?
If I am going to plunge 10 gig of my bandwidth into downloading this , i want to have some form of idea of the quality of the game.
Reason being is I wonder why they made it free to play ? did the player ratio go down ? people didnt want to pay subscription ?
some other reason ?

You can play the game until about level 50 (out of 65) without having any limits (except the fact that you have a restriction to sending more than a few PM's and global messages every hour in-game to stop spam, although Kinship and Fellowship chat has no restriction) Then you have to pay for the 2 expansion packs which are: Mines of Moria (Around R200) aswell as Siege of Mirkwood which is also R200, give or take a few. Here is the full price list but in not sure if the prices are still the same.

By the time that you get this 'conflict' you should know if you like the game or not. They have to make money some way right?

I have played both WoW and LOTRO and wow (to me) simply doesn't compare. The graphics are some of the best out there when it comes to MMO's, although its not as good as Age of Conan. The music is great and is unique to every area. Questing is also incomparable, the storyline and lure is great and stays true to the books, further it is pretty much like all other mmo's - collect flowers and kill lots of mobs tough there are many other types of quests. Endgame and PVP is what the game lacks a bit. Once you max out one or two characters the game becomes a little bit boring. But dont be alarmed as it took me 3 years to get to this stage. PVP is very restricted, there is only 1 zone and, even tough its big it still gets rather repetitive after a while, there are basically 5 keeps that the players have to capture and all the players are there together (its not like wow where you get 'Private' pvp zones, the whole server play's in the same zone which makes for pretty epic battles). You can only PVP in this one zone however, there is a 1v1 dueling system. The Creep (Monster) side of the PVP has no leveling involved, you simply jump in and play agains Freeps (Good guys who actually level) They do infact level in ranks as do the freeps, the difference is that freeps get a rank (sergeant-at-arms) and Monsters get new skills to use. This is balanced by restricting free players to play as Creeps, they have to pay a certain amount of actual money to play.

The game did not go free due to a drop in players, if i am correct i think that it was the 2nd most played MMO, (beneath WoW ofcourse) The actual reason is that the creaters also own D&D Online and, when they made it free to play their income went up tremendously. LOTRO's sales have gone up 500% since it went F2P. Trust me when i tell you that this game is definitely better than WoW, all my friends who have started playing it quit wow for it and im sure they will never go back.

I played this for about a week and a half. Even though I am a Huge Lord of the Rings fan, I just couldn't find any enjoyment in this game.

The graphic were quite nice, but I prefer Guild Wars over most MMO games out there.

My DL was only on 2% this morning. Damn Inet stops working in the middle of the night.
And I got a message that I exceeded their fair use policy by Downloading too much.
I'm pulling about 50-60GB per month on my 384kb line.

I'm still playing on the Laurelin-RP server. With wow I got bored after a while. No storyline really. The gfx in Lotro is very good, sound is pleasing on the ears and gameplay is good. I enjoy the crafting much more in Lotro as well. I'm lucky enough to have bought a VIP account so everything is unlocked for me. Even as a free player you have plenty to do. As you complete deeds you earn points which you can spend on the new Lotro store. There you can buy anything from skills, horse riding, horses and many more.

I think the F2P option was a very good move for them. With the new migration to Turbine you won't lose anything. Existing accounts will remain the same. All your items will be transferred during the merge. Even server names will remain the same. If you are a VIP account holder you lifetime subscription will be honored.

I think the game is strong if not going stronger each month.

If you're a fan of the book / movies, you'll absolutely love this game.

WOW. That game looks awesome.
It has been mentioned that I have to buy the 2 expansions.
What does the expansions do?
And what can we play without the expansions?

LOTRO is Free to Play now. So in theory you do not need to spend a cent on the game apart from the bandwidth to download it. There are certain areas that you need to purchase (Moria and Mirkwood being 2 of the areas) BUT it'll be at least 2 months before you get there.

In that time you can level to at least level 30 without spending a cent and you can get a good feel for the game in that time :)

The expansions unlock The mine of Moria which allows you to level up to level 60 from 50. The Mirkwood expansion will allow you to level up to 65 which is the current level cap. The original game (not including the expansions) includes all area's from Ered Luin to The Misty Mountains. As somebody mentioned above, you should be able to get to level 30 without any limits, then you have a choice to buy quest packs. If you buy them it will help you get to level 50 faster, if you do not it is still possible to get to level 50 but it will take longer. Moria and Mirkwood also have the best instances in the game like the watcher in the water that gets you some of the best armor in the game.

cant w8 to start playing! but the only prob is that the only RPG ive played is Roseza lol, but i enjoyed it and im a HUGE lord of the rings fan.

i would dig to join with a noobie aswell to learn and help eachother out. the gfx look sexy, shot for uploading the pics :D

Maybe you guys can help me... So I downloaded the game, and created an account both with Codemasters and LOTRO. However, when I try to log in using the Turbine Launcher it says that the account has no active subscription.

Please advise, thanks!

Did you download the US or EU version? maybe you created an account on US but downloaded the EU one or vice versa?

Nevermind, I found the answer. What a painful process. And nowhere do they seem to explain how to go about it.

You need to actually open a ticket in order to obtain the product key which you then enter. Took me almost an hour now to figure this out sigh.
