Lulzsec takes down League of Legends, Eve Online, Minecraft

and what is the point of killing a gaming news and info website

As far as I know they took down Escapist only because a few members there were badmouthing them.

Minecraft and EVE? how long till they hit steam...

Nah, I don't think they'd be going after the big fish like Steam. They seem to be targeting the smaller guys.

What should be happening now, is that every single company that stores client information along with payment information should be toughening up on their security. If they haven't started by now, they're a time bomb.

EVE? Epic? Nintendo? Bethseda?

I'd hardly regard those as small players in the market.

But lets face it, they're not nearly as big as, say, Activision or Blizzard or Steam.

Who do you think is most likely to retaliate? The creators of an MMO that has a player base of about 800k, or the creators of an MMO that has 12 million users?

Nintendo is really the only seemingly big target they've hit so far.

Because they're trolling.
Why troll?
To elicit an emotional response as entertainment.
Who are they trolling?
You, shadowfox, czc, densweep, etc. Basically everybody who responds.

To them, there is nothing funnier than seeing people rage and piss at what they do.
Label that anything you want, but YOU are ultimately the sucker of this little story...

Yes, that is why they are hacking multi-miilion/billion dollar companies! To elicit some responses from people on forums. Your post however can be considered trolling.

Lulzsec will hack anyone that is vulnerable. If you follow their activity they really don't discriminate, the only criteria they look for are setups that have below par security, specifically not abiding by the bare minimum security standards. Their targets range from personal blogs to the US senate. Obviously their major gaming related hacks get a lot more media attention because of the recent Sony disaster and the sheer size of the user base affected.

If I had to make a semi-educated guess, I would say a fair amount of the people comprising Lulzsec would be current/ex information security professionals (this almost seems obvious now to be honest). As much as they spew a lot of leetspeak and nonesense about lulz boats, I really don't think they are your average "12 year old script kiddie" or "basement dwelling virgin". They've used a frightening amount of their own 0day exploits to break into these systems, a lot of the time simply "exploring" them for weeks, even months unnoticed.

Their only motivation really seems to be to expose how low a priority security is given within most enterprises, when it should be given equal priority to something like performance and even functionality. This seems obvious to onlookers but for some reason a lot less apparent to "business" types that simply don't see immediate business value in it.

I'm not saying I side with them, but I can understand their motivation since it is something everyone in IT has to deal with almost every day. If a genuinely malicious group with a similar sets of skills appeared, we would be in a world of trouble.

Sony? these guys are not discriminating, huge evil corporation or champion indie dev, its all for the lulz

I have had enough of these clowns. Seriously, what are you trying to do? You aren't helping anyone...espescially not us users. GTFO
