Magic - The Gathering

Im not sure about Magic really, But there are a lot of us playing Hearthstone... "whistling:

lol... but no, I just think Magic is more of a social game and better done in reality than virtually. I still have all my Magic cards and would love to find peple/friends to play with down at the pub (and get stared at strangely by passers by).

i played Magic many many moons ago. I really enjoyed it at the time. but Hearthstone just flows a lot better. games feel quicker and more action packed. its absolutely nailed the "easy to learn, hard to master" formula. if you have not, you really need to give it a try!

I completely agree with you [MENTION=532]Hiro[/MENTION] - Hearthstone is loads of fun, but I can't imagine sitting around a table with mates and some beers playing it like I can (or did) with Magic. Like I said, I just find Magic to be a more social experience.

PS: no offense intended with the "BASTARD" comment :p
 
Started playing HS about 3-4 weeks or so back. Really enjoying it :D Its really user-friendly to play on the go on a small screen. Havent installed in on my PC yet.

Think its going to take me many months to earn enough gold/cards to build a strong enough deck to move up the ranks, but its plenty fun to play around in the Arena and Tavern Brawl on a level playing field. Doesnt feel like a grind at all :D

and i agree with your point regarding "real world game". I don't think HS would work as well IRL. Something like GWENT would be awesome, as its more about cunning subterfuge. but HS is ideal as an electronic experience. I think Magic works well in the setting you mentioned, a group of friends, gathered together, playing for many hours.

Yeah i actually used to play magic in league format till about 10 years ago a lot has changed but a lot has stayed the same. And as a few have stated it's more of a social interaction game than an online thing. there are people that go all serious on the PC version playing online and collecting but i think a lot of people have realized that collecting the Digital cards spending your money on compared to spending your money on something you can actually feel and carry around with you outweighs the pc version and that's why it's not that big

My collection actually sold for 18K when got rid of it but i still have one Black lotus left First print which alone is about 18K worth
I'm still pondering buying the 2015 MTG for pc just for fun

but yeah, the MTG pc adaptations were bad, then they got better, then it tanked again (yes I'm looking at you 2015. why you remove 2-headed giant???)
 
Magic is alive and well. Not sure about PC, but there is a butt-load of people playing it. Lots of tournaments and there are a lot of vendors now selling cards. I still play a lot, more Vintage format with some of my colleagues (it is fun to be able to use your older cards!) and we also do some sealed play every three months.

I play Magic on PC (also play it in real life, not as much as i use to though). I think 2015 improved the deck building over the previous versions at least.

Does Hearthstone have 2 vs 2? also are all game modes ranked? I think the Magic ranking system works really well, I haven't played in a while so don't know how easy it is to find a game now.
 
Ok firstly [MENTION=4071]BeoTeK[/MENTION] I think you would be surprised how social Hearthstone can be... I often have my mates around for a "Hearth Braai" as we call it... Guys bring their tablets and we play a bit against each other, and we always end up playing on my TV with all of us doing an Arena run or 6 with everyone giving input... Its loads of fun!

[MENTION=1872]Grievous[/MENTION] Hearthstones got a ranked and casual mode, casual is where people basically "test" decks for the ladder, but this in tern make "casual" anything but a casual game mode... You often get new players that think, ok cool casual mode will do for me, when in fact they would do better playing on the ladder at rank 25, because in casual you can come up against a guy thats playing a top tier deck, against a complete novice... The ranking system is not fantastic in hearthstone, and a lot of guys say its more of a grind than skill based... once you get down to rank 1 the next level is the "legend" rank, which basically puts all the players that make legend onto a new ranking system, with 1 being the best rank, and the worst being however many guys make it to legend that season... Seasons last 1 month...

I too used to play Magic, but roughly 10-15 years ago, and i have looked at the Magic 2015 game, and its just so much more overwhelming than hearthstone... And to be honest the Hearthstone client kicks the Magic ones arse... Even coming from someone that understands Magic, i found it difficult to get back into...

That is supposedly trying to make up for the negativity surrounding Magic 2015 and trying to catch up with Hearthstone . Magic Duels: Origins is F2P too.

You will see that Two-Headed Giant mode is back in the video...

I actually forgot about the fact that Hearthstone is on mobile, which just solidifies my point. I kinda of the belief that society is getting too reliant on cellphones and such. At least Magic allows you put this stuff away and actually socialize. For goodness sake, I was at John Dory's the other day and there was this other couple sitting together, not talking, but on the phones for the entire 2 hours I was there. Didn't see them say a single word to each other or look at each other.

Sorry, a bit off topic but that's the point I'm trying to make, and that is what I love about Magic.

In my opinion its exactly like taking a box full of cards to a mate... Except they are all neatly stored on my tablet, and no one stresses about ruining the sometimes ridiculously expensive cards, that you really really want to play! We still all chat, exactly like we would if we had cards all over the table...

From an investment point of view, I also dont believe that I could be as competitive as i am in Hearthstone, if i was playing magic. I think the reward systems in place out do magic, and with hearthstone being so young, there are no where near as many cards to collect, which can be seen as a positive and a negative...

All in all Hearthstone for me has become an incredibly social game... Iv been to Jukes in centurion numerous times, met loads of great people in the process and shared some hearty beverages at the same time... I even met a guy on the ladder that saw the ZA in my battleTag that Iv met up with plenty at Jukes, and we are constantly discussing deck strategies, and new expansions, and cards etc...

As for people sitting on their phones at dinner, i find that disgusting... Its worse for me when a family goes out together and the kid sits on his PSP or on a phone etc... And i do agree people need to interact with people, all im trying to get across is that Hearthstone, for me at least, has done that to a large extent...
