Political party Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele will be the Democratic Alliance's presidential candidate in upcoming general elections, DA leader Helen Zille announced on Tuesday.

"I can announce today that Dr Mamphela Ramphele has accepted the DA's invitation to stand as our presidential candidate in the 2014 general election," Zille told reporters in Cape Town....read more here: Mamphela Ramphele the DA's presidential candidate

ja all we need is to insure that the ANC dont get a two thirds majority. cause they have already said they are aiming for a two thirds majority as they plan on making changes to the constitution and that we really really dont want

I actually think it's a very clever strategy.

I disagree. I think it's a stupid move. Agang would have pulled more votes on their own as they will add under a DA banner. There are many people that would never vote DA that is also sick and tired of the ANC. Agang would have pulled alot of those votes, I think. Now these people will have to find another party to vote for or go back to the ANC.

I heard that agang was bankrupt. Would they have been able to compete?

I would disagree you probably right as when they voted for ANC they were voting for the name and not the person behind it so they wouldn't even care if Ramphele is the face of the DA.

I think this is Brilliant! Black South Africans have a problem voting for a white face... Ramphele is the perfect person for the job,and she is definitely the most educated! People are so fed up with service delivery that they want change! I think this is a huge step for the future of SA politics...

i reckon its quite a smart move to help the DA lure the mass black vote. it will certainly help to alleviate some of the moronic ANC rhetoric that if the blacks vote for the DA, then Apartheid will be brought back.

lets just hope that the masses, who keep protesting lack of service delivery, will stop voting like lemmings for the ongoing cANCer.

Like a few have said, this could go both ways. Either it's going to draw a large amount of voters for the DA (Win!) or the people that would've voted for Agang SA will vote for another party out of fear of what would happen should the DA come into power. This year's election is going to be very interesting.

*sigh* i wish i could share the optimism some of you guys have, with regards to the upcoming election. but alas, i'm a pessimist/realist. I know that we do not live in a real democracy. its a fallacy and a sham "democracy". everyone already KNOWS the ANC will win the election. its just a matter of how big of a landslide. Cyril and JZ are pretty blatant in their arrogance over this point, often stating that the ANC will rule over SA "whether you like it or not" and that they will "rule till Jesus comes". the fact that they are guaranteed to be voted in is why corruption will continue. there is zero incentive/fear to make them stop looting the tax coffers.

as long as the uneducated masses continue to blindly vote for the ANC, nothing will change. and it certainly won't be changing in our lifetimes, nor our children's lifetimes. perhaps the generation after that, once the foundation of the anc support base has realised that apartheid is only historical and cannot be used as a fear mongering tool any more.

if only the masses would realise that protesting for service delivery will not help, but VOTING will :-(

I hear you Hiro, and yes your right the ANC will win the general Election, But i hope i am right in saying that the DA stand a chance in Gauteng... And if they can do to Gauteng what they did in the Western Cape, people will SEE change, they will SEE service delivery, and that may change the minds of the masses...

This is good, very good.
I have seen first hand people publicly removing their ANC shirts and putting on DA ones. You might think, ah whatever but when it happens in the middle of a township you cant help but feel hope.
How do you feel about another 5 years of ANC rule? The only people who are stoked with another 5 years are the civil 'servants' because they get another 5 years payed holiday. Thats why their are so many flippin civil servants, so that they can bolster their votes.

I reckon the ANC are going down, you think there is going to be civil unrest/war? Sure in some areas but we all know the DA can sort our country out.

I find the name "civil servant" ironic. It is unfair to judge them all as being of similar mind, but so many are neither "servants" nor "civil". Whenever I need to deal with government on any level my expectations drop before I even enter the building.

I don't think it will be enough right now to bring down ANC. This new coalition will have 6 very short months to try and ingratiate themselves into the minds of the general populace; and I do not believe they will be able to win purely because of the time limit.

Also we cannot underestimate the fact that ANC can still say that although Dr Ramphele is the Presidential candidate; voting for her would be effectively handing back power to the whites (in the form of the DA still being lead by Zille). And there is still a strong societal aversion to a female leader [not just locally but in the world at large]; and that fact may count against them.

That being said, my hope is that an election campaign being spearheaded by some of the most brilliant political minds that our country still lays claim to will be enough to untangle the effective stranglehold that the ANC has over the political sphere in our country. I do not see victory however I do see a new bastion of hope.
