An important security feature on the new Mandela banknotes -- which were rolled out in November last year -- has been found to be defective, the Sunday Times reported on Sunday.

The security thread, the most visible feature on the notes, which was meant to be embedded in the note, was found to be easily lifting off which could be a "counterfeiter's haven", the Sunday Times reported.

The thread is produced by a German company.

well now that is a bit of a issue now isn't it?

I remember about two years ago when the market was flooded with R200mils worth of fake R200 notes. yeesh

I'm glad I've kept some of the older currency on hand if the worst comes to worst. This reminds me of when they outsourced to a Swedish company years ago, and notes were messed up as well.

From Wikipedia:
In 2011, the South African Reserve Bank issued 100-rand banknotes which were defective because they lacked fluorescent printing visible under UV light. In June, printing of this denomination was shifted from the South African Bank Note Company to Crane Currency’s Swedish division (Tumba Bruk.), which reportedly produced 80 million 100-rand notes. The South African Reserve Bank shredded 3.6 million 100-rand banknotes printed by Crane Currency because they have the same serial numbers as a batch printed by the South African Bank Note Company. In addition, the notes printed in Sweden were not the right colour, and they were one millimeter short.

It seems they have not learned from their mistakes.

I think they are still going around, although they are quite easy to spot when comparing them.

That is why I use my debit card to buy anything so no need to worry about fake notes ever.

Not all places allow swiping and some charge you for it - I had to pay a R15 swiping fee on a drinks order at a bar once and some other bars don't have card facilities either.

But I do however favour swiping over cash.

guess they'll be recalling them then.... so I'm going to get hold of as many Randelas as I can and keep them safe to sell them to Nigerian counterfeiters later :D

Randelas could also be called Mandollars

Luckily I havent been to places like that and with my SASSA card the transactions are also free which is nice.
