Many South African mothers-to-be remain unaware of the danger of drinking alcohol while pregnant, a social worker from the Saartjie Baartman Centre said on Monday.

"There is still a lot of awareness that needs to be done. Mothers don't know that if they are pregnant they should not be drinking," said Dorothea Gertse.

"What is also scary is that it's difficult to convince them that it is a high risk."

as well as smoking. I have seen two heavily pregnant women smoking before and they knew the risks. The one ladies child has turned out to be very sickly and I cant help but wonder if the kid would be the same if she hadn't smoked through her pregnancy. The other child still has a few months to go before they're born. Will be interesting to see how they turn out.
 
Annoying part is how many mothers then abandon the child and leave foster parents to look after a crying baby with withdrawal symptoms
