Party time! Excellent!

A wealthy owner of a Maserati hired four men, gave each a sledgehammer, and told them to smash his R3.5-million supercar.

I hate rich people...

That is a bit silly. Apparently, when Ferruccio Lamborghini was upset with Ferrari's bad service, he started creating sports cars himself. I think that's a slightly more productive way to show your dissatisfaction, at least if you have the money.

Although i don't think this sort of action is warranted in any event, the okes could have put a big more back into it...

If I were him and wanted to smash up such an expensive machine why not do it with some style and have it shot in to the air by an old school catapult or something less mundane.
It would probably get more hits on youtube compared to just a sledgehammer.

This is the sort of thing I hate to see, because most of us will never own a car like that. It's kind of like when they destroy so many expensive cars just for a bloody film. Give me one! Even a smashed up one, I'll take it!

From what I heard, apparently a lot of the cars that they blow up in movies have already been written off. Water damage, etc. I don't know how often that's true, though.

Upon googling this, it turns out that you're right. Well, in that case maybe it's not so bad. It kind of reminds me of those ads on TV lately, like the mom and the kid with the ice cream.

"Oh well, that's another car ruined by ice cream damage headed to the junkyard."

*Volunteers to crash car into wall... sets up fake explosion... Shows off new car at braai*

There was a movie recently (as in the last 6 years or so) where Nicholas Cage used his own car in the movie. Needless to say he wasn't driving like an old lady and it was one of the more exotic lambo's or some such car. I can't remember the movie's name, but he certainly put that car on the line.
I always thought however with the cars they used the chassis of expensive cars but the insides were the cheap parts enabling a car that looks like a porche or what ever to cost the same as a lower bmw or something.

I think you're thinking of Gone in 60 Seconds.
