Maxis producer: If Sims 4 isn't successful, there's no Sims 5

EA isn't thinking about the next Sims game at all, but the future of the series hinges on The Sims 4 performing well, Maxis producer Grant Rodiek said on the official Sims forum (cache here).

"We're not working on Sims 5," Rodiek said. "We're not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5." This isn't an absolute credo, however – when another fan asked for clarification on that statement, Rodiek said, "It's not all or nothing, per se, but something has to pay for 5."

The Sims 4 topped the UK charts last week. We've been playing it as an MTV's Real World simulator, with members of the Joystiq staff living together, cooking for each other, working and building rocket ships.

There is no way that Sims 4 is going to be a commercial failure. There are way too many people willing to spend hundreds of rands on every expansion, which I am sure there will be a lot of. Look at sales charts right now. Even after so many years after it's release, one version of The Sims will always feature on the "best selling game of the month". I foresee the same will happen with Sims 4. Maybe not now, in it's current state, but surely the sales will come.

Was a big Sims fan until the 3rd game and have been very critical of the new one with them having cut a lot of content previously available in previous base games. From what I see online though opinions seem to be getting a lot more positive since release with a lot saying it is the best base game since the first 2. I'm still annoyed that the cut content will most likely show up soon as expensive dlc or expansion packs so I'm not quite ready to buy into the developing enthusiasm just yet.

I cant believe the Sims is still going... You look at GREAT games, like Age of Empires, which we haven't seen of heard of a new one in ages, but this crap keeps coming...

I suppose when you have every 11-16 year old girl wanting to play house you get the sales numbers up...

never been a fan of the sims, only maxis game i ever enjoyed was sim city 3000, the sims reminds me of tamagochi ;)

I think that's the thing, The Sims has such a huge fan base / target market. Its a game parents allow kids to play, and older people who played the 1st one hoping that each installment will be as epic.

EA probably shouldn't have cut as many features as they did if they want it to be more successful. I suppose its just more to add to paid DLC / Expansions.

I think we can expect "Pool Stuff" & "Toddler stuff" expansions in the future.

Already top of the sales charts in Europe, This game will sell...so will all the dlc's.
There really was no need for him to open his big mouth.

It's all a game to these okes...they don't care what they say, as long as they say something to make people talk about Sims 4. Any publicity is good publicity.

I have a feeling that EA's definition of commercial success is somewhat different than our own :D I think they are counting on the DLC/expansion pack sales for it. Sure, the base game will sell as the current Sims player base will all get it. But if they don't like the base game the DLC won't sell half as well as EA hopes. My wife has every Sims 3 game, but already says that unless they drastically improve Sims 4 there's no way she's buying any more. Judging from the fan reactions, most people feel the same way.

There will be a Sims 5 because people will buy whatever crap is thrown their way, and will suck up whatever crap EA thinks up. Sims 3 is still in the top 5 sales in SA on a monthly basis.

The Sims is far from crap, it might have a shoddy business model but base product is hugely popular because it's a fun game.

Have to agree here. WE might not like it, because it's not "hardcore shooty-shooty bang-bang" like the other games, but the base game has always been very enjoyable. Yes, they are indeed milking the market by releasing millions of DLC, which they charge at full-game prices I might add, but the game itself is actually very good.

I have to admit that I played and enjoyed the first Sims when it was released. I haven't really tried the sequels much, except the third one which I hated. The idea used to be novel, but I think the idea is being milked dry now... Same as most genres, I suppose.

I'm no avid fan of The Sims, but I've played a few hours of The Sims 3, and I'll tell you right now, that I completely get the appeal. It's not a bad or crap game it's just a game that happens to be different and caters to a certain market (not that people outside of that market can't enjoy it, I certainly enjoyed my limited time with it) and for most part it delivers a great experience based on what it promises. You'd also be surprised just how many guys and overall people who aren't girls in their teens actually play The Sims games, a significant amount.

So be wary of throwing words like 'crap' , unless you're judging said game on its merits and what experience it offers. Different from your kind of experience != crap.

Also, you can't really blame Maxis for constantly making and selling The Sims while other studios aren't making more of the 'great' games you listed. Maxis (or rather EA Maxis now) has been making The Sims and SimCity games, it's what they do, have been doing and what they'll probably do for the foreseeable future as long as there's a market for their product. It's not their responsibility whether other 'great' games get made or not, as long what they make is great for their intended audience.

Have to agree with Dee here. The game is successful for what it is and not for what it is not. It is not the swansong in graphical innovation; it is not a redefinition of the true experience of gaming; it is not a pool of code so marvelous it was collected from the tears of angels. It is simply pure, stress free and scarily simple management of virtual people going about their day to day business. The simplicity of the game is what makes it so immersive. Having to commit relatively few mental resources to get involved it is simple to justify peacefully whistling away the hours simply building a life for your Sim.

Also; I know gamers from all walks whom play Sims (some religiously; some not). Just because the idea of the Sims is simple and uncomplicated; it does not invalidate Sims players from being gamers.

And as we all know; gamers are everyone.

I rate that even with the amount of Sims games, the fact that they offer so many expansion packs will attract all different market, i mean who doesn't want to live the perfect life in whatever scenario you choose, where most things go according to plan and all other failures in life are fixed in minutes :) Im pretty sure the die hard sims fans wont let them not make another... plus its fun for sadists to.
