Mechanical Keyboards vs Standard Keyboards

Hello Gamers/Enthusiasts,

I'm here to inquire about this thread's topic.

I have acquired information elsewhere already, so I understand the basic jist of it, but if anyone could explain (in layman's terms) how these two types of keyboards differ and why.

I intend to buy myself a mechanical keyboard, at some point in this year and just need to have this knowledge.

All input is welcome.

That video covered just about everything. I will say, my mechanical drove a co-worker nuts, but that's because I took it to my office.

There's also different kind of mechanical switches. I get the cherry MX blue switches, because it is overall best for typing. I can type much faster on it than a rubber dome (the advantage of the tactile feedback he mentioned was good, but he didn't say why).

The attached chart may help narrow down which switch is best for you.

Mechanical's are nice if you like to have that click sound along with actual feed back - you feel the click when the key has met the membrane of the keyboard. I tried one out for a week but it seemed too loud, and I has to type a little harder than what I normally do.

Other than that there is no real "competitive edge" that a mechanical keyboard will give you.

True, pretty much comes down to comfort. I myself have 2 mechanical keyboards, one for work (MX Brown) and one at home (MX Red) and i don't see myself going back to a normal membrane keyboard anytime soon.

I've had the opposite experience with MX Browns, I find that the keys aren't too loud and if you only push until the key actuates you use much less force. In my case it took less than an hour to get used to not bottoming out the keys :)

They don't all click though, I have a cherry MX red and there is no click just one smooth depression which I love, the red is also not very loud.

The new Razer mech switches are supposed to be rather good (they come on the blackwidow 2014).

The normal one has a 45g actuation force, but the silent edition has only 40g.

Ya, there's a lot more switches out there than listed on that chart. I was trying to keep it simple. Otherwise it'd be a bit of information overload.

i have always gotta recommend Razer keyboards though... I have the blackwidow ultimate 2013, for gaming and typing, this is the shiz :)

They change the keyswitches used every other year on the black widow... Got mine in 2012, and it thankfully has the blues :)
