Memory limitations the reason for no cross-game chat on PS3 - Sony

I can never understand why they keep giving console such little, very fast RAM. They would really be better off with lots of regular DDR RAM.

I mean it's always the same complaints, "the console has too little RAM".

Just give the PS4 8GB's of DDR3 RAM and not 1GB XDR.

It seems that it's not really a matter of quantity of RAM at all it's an issue with who has access to the RAM, it seems that the PS3 doesn't like it when RAM is shared (a given app can reserve a set amount of RAM and that doesn't change), which makes sense since having one app peak into the RAM of another app is a sure fire way of allowing hackers to run amok.
As for quantity vs quality in terms of RAM it's hard to say, games that really need large amounts of RAM over long periods of time tend to be open world games (where an entire landscape needs to be loaded up), fast pace games like FPSs tend to load items in to RAM for a short period of time before discarding it (i.e. it only needs to load an enemy model until you've blown up said enemy model then it needs to load another). Of course ideally they'd have large quantities of fast RAM but then you'd see costs sky-rocket.

Well im sure the ps4 is going to have boat loads of RAM , and in a few years even that will be "not enough" and then its time for the PS5 to take its place.

Taking into account how much RAM it does have , and looking at games like Uncharted , I Must say , developers are doing a great job with what they have.

I think when the PS3 realease 512MB was alot for most people, consider not many were puting in over 2GB. But looking back song could have made it a gig, maybe they would have had room for more improvements. But what can you do the machine is long out of development and now in homes.

They could correct it with the PS4 by adding 8Gb's of DDR3 Ram as Isengard has said, or they could think beyond that and add the 8 to 12GB of the next generation ram, thus maybe giving their console a better life span Maybe also including a seperate amount for system memory.

I agree that Sony set the RAM that way to prevent hackers from exploiting it. I'd imagine that cross-game chatting might have been possible if they had built the actual software as part of the SDK for developers to use going forward. They can link the chatting code to a Sony server and have developers release a Sony Chat patch for their games. This should allow games to pick up the new cross-game chatting feature despite the fact it's not a built-in OS feature. Of course, it also means developers have to spend extra and build it for their games. The barrier then becomes how many publishers/developers actually adopt it.
