Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes Reported to be Extremely Short

According to a preview of a near-finished build in the latest print edition of Game Informer Magazine, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes' campaign can be completed in two hours.

As reported by Kotaku, Game Informer finished the main mission in the prequel to Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain in "less than two hours," although it's important to note this did not include side-quests or extra modes.

Earlier on in the month, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said the prequel serves as something of a "tutorial" for the main game, and has a "relatively small field" in comparison. The Phantom Pain, he has promised, will be "hundreds of times larger."

Last year, Kojima explained that the full version of Metal Gear Solid V was split into two as a result of the release of PlayStation 4.

"Metal Gear Solid V is going to be a huge, a massive scale game," he said. "So the development is taking some time. That said, PS4 is launching now and it’s big."

Kojima wanted to put his game in players' hands sooner than later. "A lot of people have been asking for a new Metal Gear Solid experience, so we at least wanted to release a prologue so that people get to know what people will be, experience a chunk of the story. So that guided our decision to move forward at this time."

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will launch on March 18 in North America at $20 USD for a digital PS3/360 download, and $30 USD for the retail version.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions will be available for download at $30 USD and $40 USD at retail.

That is a really ambitious price for a 2 hour game

So if Phantom Pain (the longer one) releases in March (yay!), when does Ground Zeroes release if it's to serve as a prequel?

The article is wrong. Ground Zeroes releases in March. The Phantom Pain will probably only release next year.

Thanks that's what I assumed. I've not been following the development of the 2 titles too closely but I felt like I would've been aware of it if Phantom Pain was releasing so soon as that is the one I am waiting anxiously for. It's a shame about Ground Zeroes's length, but the same could be said about MGS 1 (I can finish the gamecube Twin Snakes version in just over an hour :p). Most MGS games are padded with very lengthy cutscenes and not exceptionally lengthy campaigns.

It's only around R450 on Takealot. I can stomach that if the campaign is short. At least they didn't dare release it at full retail price. Anyhow apparently the game looks better on PS4:

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will look "slightly" better on PlayStation 4, according to the March issue of Game Informer magazine and series creator Hideo Kojima.

The latest issue of the US gaming magazine (via VideoGamer) praises Ground Zeroes' visuals in a hands-on preview, specifically mentioning the physics and lighting of the new Fox Engine, but the article also points out that both the author and Kojima himself think the PlayStation 4 version of the game looks "slightly better" overall.

The article also points out that players can complete Ground Zeroes, a prequel for The Phantom Pain, in about two hours.

Konami is yet to confirm whether there is a resolution or frame rate difference between the Xbox One and PlayStation versions of the next Metal Gear Solid chapter, so fans might have to wait until copies are out in the wild in order to find out what exactly makes the PS4 version visually preferable.

The info has the potential to be another blow for Microsoft's latest console, which has repeatedly observed multiple third-party titles--such as Call of Duty: Ghosts, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, and Battlefield 4--perform worse on its new machine.

Earlier this week, PlayStation UK MD Fergal Gara told GameSpot that the PlayStation 4 can boast better performance right now because Sony has made the machine that developers want.

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on March 18.

OF course it will, Konami has always been ps centric and a japanese dev company making a game for a japanese console = better looking game on japanese console

am i the only one around here who actually PREFERS games to be shorter?? i already have an insane backlog. if i can get a AAA title that is only 3-4 hours long, i would be thrilled :-) Gone Home is a good example. i clocked it in one sitting, which took about 2 hours. i do not see how an extra 3-4 hours of padding would have helped. if anything, it would have diluted the game.

so if a game dev can make a TOP QUALITY game which only takes about 3-4 hours, why not ?

For me it's mostly about how long you have to wait for the game. It's been what, over 5 years since the last MGS, so the new game being 2 hours long is pretty disappointing. Following those 2 hours you've then gotta wait for the next game. I don't mind short (as in 8-10 hours), but I don't want to start the game and finish it the same day when I've waited ages for it. Not to mention how much they charge for games. I don't want to spend R600 on something that lasts me 2 hours.

As a working adult with a wife and kid, I find I would prefer more games to be shorter because I just don't have the time to play them. Besides, if what makes a game long also makes it repetitive and boring, that's even worse.

2 hours to complete a game is a little on the ridiculous side though. I guess I would prefer games to be medium length.

same boat, wife and 2 kids. which is why i would be thrilled if SP games clocked in at 4 hours. honestly, lots of games pad out the hours with extra arb side missions. a good example of this is Saints Row IV. now don't get me wrong, i friggin LOVE this game to bits (even love it more than GTA V). but good grief, its got way too many repetitive side missions which are just basically carbon copies of previous missions.

sorry for derail, back on topic. MGS V is short. Discuss.

R450 is heavy for 2hours in my opinion, must be nice to be rich though :)

Metal Gear Solid 5 dev defends Ground Zeroes length

"Are Journey and Dear Esther long?" Kojima Productions' Jordan Amaro asks.

It doesn't matter if you can complete Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes in under two hours because length isn't necessarily associated with quality. That's the message Kojima Productions designer Jordan Amaro has for fans up in arms about the recent news that you might be able to complete the upcoming prequel in just one sitting.

"Are Journey and Dear Esther long? [Voltaire's 18th-century writing Candide] is like a hundred pages at most," Amaro said. "Yet they are masterpieces of video game and literature. This smearing will not stain and affect what we're aiming to achieve with MGS, the game industry in Japan, or video games as a whole."

Journey and Dear Esther might not be long games, but they sell for $15 and $10, respectively. That's below what Konami is charging for Ground Zeroes, which ranges from $20-$40 depending on platform and delivery choice.

"I want people to celebrate the new MGS like we used to. I'm not dismissing their concerns. But this [issue surrounding the game's length] has been trumped-up," Amaro said.

The game is a prequel to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is said to be "hundreds of times larger" than Ground Zeroes. Konami hasn't set a release date for that game yet.

The length of Ground Zeroes isn't the only part of the game drawing heated debate. It's also been revealed that the PlayStation 4 version of the game looks "slightly better" than the Xbox One iteration, a point that Metal Gear Solid series creator Hideo Kojima reportedly agrees with.

Konami has yet to confirm whether or not there is a resolution or frame rate difference between the two next-generation versions, but it wouldn't be the first time a multiplatform game was visually preferable on Sony's console.
