MGS V and the woes of Retail

Hopefully I'm allowed to type this and not get banned.

I bought MGSV on steam a week before it came out, expecting to be able to pre-load it. I then found out that there would be no pre-load.
I managed to get a refund and ordered it off Takealot instead. The day it was being delivered I read on reddit that the retail version was basically an empty box with a code to download off steam (Never had this happen).

Now the problem was I have just gotten fibre but it only has a 50gb cap so I dont want to use half on one game.
My work has crazy good speed so I downloaded a steam torrent of it with the hopes of copying it into my steam folder and maybe verifying files and only having to download a little bit.
Is this possible?
And where do you put it, as there is a downloading folder common folder etc?

It sucks that they didn't put the game on the disc. Hey and don't worry about being banned. Ugh we must really be more friendly to newcomers. :) Me included.

You can download the game at work and then in Steam there's a backup option. You can even split the backup over various discs and then just copy those files over to a memory stick. That's what I normally do. Even if I take only a third of the game home today and copy it over and then copy more the next day. I suck at explaining.

If you don't come right then I can post some screenshots of how to do it. Would you like a guide? I can make one tomorrow if necessary.

Was worried about being banned for posting anything to do with torrenting, as some forums I've seen do that.

Thanks for the reply though, after work I'll check up on that backup option.

Oh I didn't even see the torrent bit. I was thinking that you can install Steam at work and then download it through Steam and do the backup within Steam.

Its a pity such a great game is being led down by some really obvious stupid judgement calls, the PC DVD and DLC prices.

or perhaps see if someone is close to you from whom you might copy the required files.

Yeah, the rule of thumb here is that torrenting as such is okay to discuss, but pirating is bad and taboo, mmmkay?

The other option you have is to post your area and hope that someone close to you will backup their already downloaded one in exchange for a six-pack or a tinkie or something.

Yeah I agree, The torrent I have doesn't come with a crack, it is literally just the steam download. So I will see if I can just transfer the files into steam. If it doesnt work then I will try get a backup from someone in area.

Edit: Thanks for the responses and not jumping on me.

I would say though, let Steam initiate the download in order to create the file/folder structure. Stop and quit Steam, then overwrite files from the torrented download. All should work hunky-dory.

;)

It should be possible, as long as you name the folder correctly. If you don't, Steam won't detect it and won't be able to verify the game files properly. I have done it on occasion if I'm waiting for a delivery of a game and don't want to wait for updates to download after install.

I was actually thinking about doing the exact same this morning. I wanted to order from TakeAlot which would leave me waiting a week or more for the game, but luckily I saw that Raru sends you the code for the game if you buy from them.

Sadly this doesn't work anymore, because Steam no longer downloads games directly to the steamapps/common folder. It instead creates a temporary folder in steamapps/downloading. Steam only detects existing files if they exist in steamapps/common. I've tried copying existing files into the temp folder in steamapps/downloading, but it seems Steam doesn't detect them if the game has already started downloading.

oh wow... did not know that. Thanks.

Probably another measure of encryption or for the purpose of pre-loading before activation.

This is true, but it works equally well just to copy the files directly into the Steamapps/common folder before you begin the install. Then start the install and Steam detects the existing files pretty well. Sometimes it's short an update or two but I have very rarely experienced problems with this method.

Ok so in my steam apps I have appmanifest 282222 (not actual number)
then in downloading folder I have a folder named 282222 and below that three files state 282222

Should I delete the gig ive already downloaded off steam and then delete anything related to 282222. And instead copy to common folder and then reinstall from that? What would I name file?

Or must is there another way?

It has to be the exact folder name otherwise Steam won't detect it. I found a thread on the Steam forums with the same question and it seems from there that the folder structure is Steamapps/common/MGS_TPP (so the folder should be named MGS_TPP).

Maybe someone who has the game already can just confirm for us?

Thanks for the help got it going.

I did what has been said by you Graal and Staggerlee. Deleted existing mgsv download. Copied the Torrent to common folder with the name MGS_TPP. Then I installed it as per usual (it then says it is checking for existing files) when it got to the end it looked like it was gonna start from zero.

It suddenly shot up to 19gigs, so I only have just over a gig to download which is a million times better than before. So thank you.
