Minecraft goes gold

Yay! At last :p
No more having (I hope) issues when updating the server from one version to another. 1.7 to 1.8 was a big example of this :D
At least this way plugin developers can concentrate on making their plugins better instead of having to make big chances to suit the major changes.

From a player's perspective, I can't wait to try it all out. I have only briefly looked at the new update and it looks really exciting.

I don't see myself playing Minecraft until Mojang fixes the netcode. It's fucking ridiculous that the game uses over 100mb/h.

Considering the size of the game world im not surprised. Remember its all procedurally generated so the more u explore the more it uses.

Correct.
I've been playing since alpha and I've learnt one thing..... stop exploring the whole time and then it's sorted. Learnt that rather quickly.

I've seen usage go down to an average of 10-15KB/s over several hours.

Only an issue if ur capped. I regularly drag 100+ gb off the net so i really couldn't care less.

So glad its finally released. Keen to see the finished product.
PS having to upgrade server mods all the time was annoying.

I have been playing Minecraft since the beginning of the year. Lately it seems a bit resouce intensive. Maybe my machine is just a pile of junk (which it is by the way), but still, fps of more than 5fps should be relatively easy to get?? Are you guys also seeing performance hits with the latest code? Will the full eelease be better then?

That's not entirely true. It's loading all the chunks and chunk errors that causes it. Every time you get a chunk error, your client keeps trying to redownload that chunk and fails. Most of the time, this is what causes high bandwidth usage.
