Minecraft slates Windows 8

This is still pretty legit imo. It shows for example how hard MS is pushing the whole closed/certified-only angle. Notch is quite right to call BS.

I'd like to see more factual reasons like a decent comparison between win7 and win8 minus the "troll" attitude or the "o my god, it is a second iteration it must be kak". If he really felt so strong about closed systems... then why is there an version for the iOS?

Sigh, once again I must ask: where were all these industry players YEARS ago? What have they done to develop linux? Nothing! Why? Because it was lekker to sit on their arses and just see the $$$ come in. Now that M$ like apple, who btw notch has developed for, is moving over to closed system, they kak their pants like pros. lol.

Oh and.... wait for it... erm windows RT is not windows 8 or windows 8 pro, there is quite a difference. Might want to read up and that :)

Now can you perhaps present a comparison for real good reason why windows 8 and windows 8 pro is BS?
Have you actually used it or is your reply purely based on another's opinion?

I wait patiently for a full comparison :)

Finally:
What I mean by iStatus updates, I just don't want this to also turn into a iStatus of each and every "new status" for Notch's or whomever's whims. *sick*. (we need a sick smiley)

Going to really lol hard when this valve OS/Console/PC comes out and it is part closed or is there an open source steam client I've missed?

The problem is that Windows has always been an open system, and most people have always used Windows. I'm pretty miffed about it myself. I won't be getting Win8, and I judge that a lot of other people won't too. This might be an even bigger disaster than Vista. If this is what all future Windows OSs are going to be about, then I judge a giant portion of people will move over to Linux.

Not really a good excuse for not developing linux. It is however human nature to go least resistance route and settle in nice zone instead of pull finger zone. If they had actually helped linux along I'd bet we wouldn't have had this thread at all. Now that nice zone is taken away they are angry? Shouldn't we be angry at them for doing nothing with something that could have been great? Last windows threat I thought was a threat was silenced... and it really looked at corel linux could have done the job or at least start something worthwhile.

Now I'd must have used either use some from of black magick or totally diffident windows 8 to install what I want and not being forced to use the windows app store with my dev, public and final release of windows 8. Then again that is only the case for RT as I've been trying to say all a long. Windows 8/pro does allow you to make use of it without having a gun to your head.

I take it you have at least used the public preview?

Vista was lank kak because it was too resourceful. In all three builds I've played with windows 8 has performed pretty well. In fact I'd say that I/O** is a lot better than windows 7. Maybe applications that doesn't close might seem wrong, but is it when there is a proper memory manager in place**? So start button is gone, metro UI is there... I'd agree that that metro screen with the blocks on are quite terrible and I'd swapped that around for my own 'start menu' or at least stardock's one. The UI imho, talking about the clear look and feel of it, please note not the app-blocks-thing, is really better looking that windows classic ever was. Up and too windows 7 I'd always remove all the fluff and just went classic, because I hated it.

If this is what all future Windows OSs are going to be about, then I judge a giant portion of people will move over to Linux.
It's a bitch not being in nice zone hey :)

This might be really good for linux, maybe some people can finally pull finger from arse and help to develop what should have been already in place.

In the end all I see is developers now bemoaming the wrong end of the stick being pretentious.

**Under correction.

Finally: Let's used the OP's post as a real life example:

Product manager: " Hey John I would like to know if we should use windows 8. "
John: " It's kak, Notch said so. "

Product manager: " Thank you. "

/PD goes off to Luke rather...

Product manager: " Hey Luke I would like to know if we should use windows 8. "
Luke: " I've heard it is kak, but with my initial investigation I can say that it would give you boost in I/O, Mobile usability, <insert other cons and pros>. "

/PD weights in the cons and pros

Product manager: " We don't really have mobile now, but it might take up. However better I/O would be great, but I'm not sure about the app store. "
Luke: " That is only in windows RT. "
Product manager: " Seeing that we are still in windows x and some of the technologies, which outweighs the negatives in the short and long term, I would say lets get 10 and do 1 month trail before committing further. "

Personally I'd rather have the second scenario before just going on a whim which so far seems only to be true in one of the three case, meaning RT is limited, 8 and 8 Pro is not. I'd love to see how the first scenario flies before an exec board. Still waiting on the comparison from Notch, OP, JP etc etc why windows 8 is bullshit or fuckedup. Sensationalism is just miff, the end.

If there is more cons to windows 8 both in hardware and software then sure stuff it, lets stay on windows whatever. However if it is only about RT then I'd wonder where the real bemoaning sits. So far it seems out of their own procrastination they are now in a fix.

Let me just add. Its a thing Microsoft does. Release a decent os then the next one is kak. I had this discussion with a friend. We reckon they like to experiment after they release a solid os.

So windows 8 is more of an experiment than anything else I reckon.

I really doubt it.

Yeah linux is a pain to use. Windows is simple. People aren't going to move bec of one kak os. Like I said in my previous comment.
They are know to release shitty os after the solid os.

I think some people are miss interpreting something here. Windows 8 isn't a closed platform. All the certificate does is make sure a program adheres to certain guidelines. If you don't have the certificate for you program it can still run on windows 8, the user will just get a message stating it hasn't been certified by Microsoft. If anyone is wondering the certification requirements are things like, your program mustn't require compatibility mode to be able to run, that sort of thing.

I've been using it for like 3 months solid now & I can say that in its current state it really truly is kak. And thats coming from someone who initially defended it.

Essentially it is Win 7 + some awesome improvements (Faster, epic task manager, fast boot, troubleshooter works) + large amounts of utterly broken GUI changes.

The whole metro thing simply does not work & they won't be able to fix it because it is _fundamentally_ broken. Its not a question of adding polish & some service packs.

Start button fiasco. Or more accurately start menu fiasco. I don't need a physical button. I do need a usable menu though.

Search function entirely broken. Used to be WinKey - "Control panel" - enter. Now they split apps, docs and settings. Why the fuck must I now suddenly select the category. Worked perfectly fine in Win 7...now its a step back & a massive hassle.

Between those two (start menu crap + search crap) they killed all the usable ways to launch application. Right now I'm doing WinKey + R & typing in the app name into the run dialog.

Useless charm thing which gets in the way when doing something on the right of the screen (Like uhm scroll bars).

Zilch integration between apps & applications (They even have different taskbars). I mean wtf kind of an idea is that...2 taskbars?

When clicking in the top left corner of the screen (e.g. to select a chrome tab) it opens (slowly 2-3sec) the photo app. I mean wtf?!? I want my chrome tab not to view an empty photo library.

Apps version of things (e.g. chrome/IExplore) are utterly useless. So broken in fact that I have my doubts about them being usable even with touch based input.

If there were a way to disable all of the metro interface crap it would be a fine OS...better than Win 7.

Also, the apps won't get any better. MS is *paying* developers to port their stuff into the app store, yet app numbers have plateaud. The developers don't want to touch it because its a steaming pile of shit. Worse they don't have any confidence in MS to stick to their guns. MS just convinced them to learn .NET & invest a pile of resources in that. Now MS is screwing them over by switching to JS+HTML5.

Oh and Win 8 recently wiped all my windows setting. Sure it is beta software atm...but its just so broken that I don't see this working out anytime soon.

Quite, but Notch, myself & others aren't talking about how things *are* but rather the direction things are taking. You say its fine...its optional. Try loading an unsigned driver into Win 8 and see how far you get...doesn't work. Yeah those used to be optional too.

So all your complaints rests on three things:

1) start button - stardock is offering solution, not ideal, but it replaces the non existing start button and for example adds searching.
2) way UI works - same as 1 however ui hasn't bothered me that much yet.
3) your settings got wiped - origin wiped my games, and ?

As for "no4" mr notch and apps, still waiting on why they only now kak their pants and having done nothing if anything at all to develop linux or alternatives. What exactly are you doing, I mean you are lank worried about things or are you just another /like or /unlike like Notch and Gabe?

Great thinkers, piss poor dooers

Finally... Windows 7 doesn't play too much homey towards unsigned drivers either.

None of us jumped in on Linux earlier because we didn't have issues with Windows. Windows was perfect for us. To be honest, even though I'll likely go over if really necessary, I'm still not particularly amped about the prospect of using Linux.

I understood full well what he said. He's complaining because Notch is more interested in making new games than supporting Linux.
