MMO Future, sandbox?

Fresh post from one of my favourite blog commentators on my favourite hobby:

Followed up by a re-read of an older article from the lead on EQNext and EQNext Landmark:

Makes a lot of sense.

Personally I hated EVE, even though I played it for 6 months. Why play when you hate it? Well as Tobold said, it made for memorable moments. I still vividly remember trying to get to 0 sec space in a series of ships as they got shot out from under me and ending up getting their in a lifepod. Along the way negotiating passage from people, shouting at people for killing poor defenseless me. I sweated for 3 hours. Good memory, interesting story, hated having to do it though.

I believe they are both right, questing is very old school and I have seen em all. Yes I sound like an old man sitting in a chair sipping a beer. Maybe I am ;-) But 20 years of MMOs is a long time and many many quests.

We all know which beta Tobold was playing in.

MMO Future, sandbox?

pfft... Not going to go fly well with those that needs instant achievement and hand holding.

Dark fall, Mortal online and other VS coke-a-cola-market: WoW, GW and Rift. I don't see the box leading, I see the sheep sheeping :D

I really like Sandbox games, especially Sandbox survival games, there has definitely been a boost of games in the genre recently.

There was an announcement the other day of creating a game using the Earth as the map. That to me will be the ultimate sandbox as long as they let you do pretty much everything. Currently playing EVE Online (since July 2009) and love it. It's an unregulated sandbox. Also recently started playing World of Warcraft and I'm so fed up with the "Go fetch x of this" and "Go kill x of that" it's annoying as hell.

Is this what your looking for ?

My issue is that I'm in love with the concept of a sandbox MMO where I have the ability to create or destroy as I please, but I've been incredibly bored with the large majority of sandbox MMO's I've delved into. I hate to admit it, but I enjoy having a bit of direction in a game and struggle to create my own fun. My ideal game would be a good mix of sandbox and themepark elements, with an interesting storyline leading up to a complicated end-game scenario where having reached max level is only just the beginning of the rest of the game.
