MOBO + CPU Help

Flex

Will lift for boobs!
Okay guys, I need some of your thoughts here.

I currently have a X79 Extreme Mobo, with a 3820 in my machine.
I got a z97X with a 4770K that I can replace the current mobo and CPU with.

Now I have done some research, and apparently this 3820 is a beast when overclocked, and maintains itself well when overclocked.

So will it be worth it to replace the x79 3820 with the Z97 4770K or must I keep what I currently have in?

Thought?

I'm a sucker for the assumption that "newer generation = better, if both perform similarly"...hehe

Otherwise google that shit and see which one comes out on top.

Z97 is the superior chipset by miles.
Although the x79 is still decent, the Z97 with that 4770K will have it beat in almost every single aspect.

You can overclock the 4770K too so I'd imagine it would still come out ontop

My dilemma is that the x79 is a beast of a Mobo! Maybe I should see to where i can overclock the 3820. It can apparently go comfortably to the 4.6-5 ghz range without any heating problems with a proper cooler

Yeah the chip set was something I was also considering ! Is it that much better though?

If you just go to CPU boss then the 4770k is much better than the 3820. But that is not over clocked. And doesnt factor in the rest of the setup. If only it was that simple! I am at a crossroads! =D

I've already given you the answer.

Z97 is overall the better platform.
While the 4770K will perform better than the 3820 at the same clocks.

Howzit guys!

I've recently decided to upgrade from my current MB and CPU. I've been looking around but when it comes to things like which CPU is better for gaming and a bit of video editing (only something i do occasionally, nothing serious) or which MB will have enough SATA ports to connect a few 3 - 4, i kind of get left behind.

From what I've seen i'm interested in the 4690K and the Z97 Gaming 5. I feel this could be a good combo to update to from what i currently have but would love some of your opinions/feedback. Maybe i'm being a complete buffoon and someone has a better suggestion.

My price range at this point in time is around 8 - 9k, so if anyone has a few suggestions or reasons why i should look into something else i would appreciate it a lot. :D

What CPU and Mobo do you currently have?

Also, I'm assuming you don't want to go Skylake and have to replace your DDR3 RAM with DDR4?

Currently running on a Z68AP-D3 with a 2500K CPU

Just got some new DDR3 recently so i really don't want to upgrade that again.

My opinion would be that you don't upgrade, and just overclock the 2500K. I have the exact same CPU and it is still more than fast enough. I got a aftermarket air cooler and overclocked it to 4.5GHz (no voltage change required). I can push it more if I start fiddling with the voltage.

How about a new GPU rather? :D
What GPU do you have?

If you really want to upgrade your CPU and mobo though, I won't stop you :)

I've already got the CPU clocked around 4.4GHz and i'm running a GTX 970. I just feel the MB is holding me back at this point which is how the whole upgrade idea started. Just wanted to know some of my fellow gamer's opinion :D Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah I'd say stick with what you have for now, unless you are dead set on upgrading. Heck, I don't even have a Z board, I still have a P67 (the Z chipset wasn't released when I bought my rig). :D
