More RAM gonna make that much difference?

I have 6 gig OCZ 1600mhz now. Want to upgrade my mobo so that i have 6 slots for ram. Then i want to get another 3 sticks of 4gig OCZ modules. Will this help with gaming or is it going to be over kill with 18gig RAM? It will probably help with more multi-tasking. At the same time i will upgrade the gfx card to a 5870 or 5970 or GTX470.

Not True Grimspoon. There Will be a Difference.

If You Rightclick on my Computer and Click Properties. It will then say 18GB instead of 6GB. So it Differs.

:P

mainly slightly faster load times and better performance all round on memory related tasks and benchmarks.

game related minor if at all noticable

If you do a lot of RAW Image processing, then sure it might make a difference but I cant see how it will make a truly noticeable difference in gaming.

"mainly slightly faster load times and better performance all round on memory related tasks and benchmarks." Explain how that works?
Not like you are going to be using 6gb so you will not see a performance increase unless you do video editing or cad work.

It depends what your doing with your PC, if its just a gaming desktop with a few memory heavy programs in the background, 6GB is plenty. I upgraded to 12GB recently, only because I run a few virtual machines to test apps I'm developing across different environments, and normally have a game running as well.

Still, 18GB at this point in time in a work+gaming desktop is very likely overkill.

My friend does lots of renders and he has 12 gig and it only uses 75% if he runs 3 render programs at once, so for gaming no it will make no difference rather get a GTX480 It runs any game on ultra high on my 23' screen.

Just to add:

Make sure that you check your specs for the mobo you're thinking of getting first. My mobo has got 6 slots but if I want to run tri-channel DDR I can only use 3 slots. The second I put anything else in the board doesn't work.

Ja who would pay R15000 when you could almost get 3 x 5970's for the price. Not that you could run them in the same pc but still :P
Also it is by far the nosiest GPU on the market.

Total overkill,i am running 8gigs and thats already a waste. And no the gtx480 does not run very hot in a well ventilated case.

Cheers

Rather get a bigger lcd if you realy want to upgrade or get rid of that 4890 and get a 5000 series or a gtx 400 series
