More than 4Gb a waste?

Overkill?
I've yet to find an application that actually uses a massive amount of RAM.
Well, 3DSMAX does, but there's no real perforance increase in a high poly count scene from 4Gb to 6Gb - could be processor dependant.

Anyway. What are your views? 6Gb an overkill or 4Gb the sweet spot.
(roll on Win7)

I think for the DDR2 architecture probably 4Gb's is a sweet spot for power users and gamers.
For the new DDR3 and Corei7 i think 6Gb Tripple Channel will become the mainstream sweetspot.

I don't know...
I don't want to go below 6gb for some reason but i think its just so I can future proof myself!

I raised this thread, just fleshing out my thoughts, wondering if anyone else has been pondering a 4Gb to 6Gb upgrade.

I went from 4Gb to 6Gb coz one of my 1Gb modules died a horrible no-mo-POST death.
I replaced the 2 X 1Gb with 2 X 2Gb keeping the other 2 X 1Gb kit.
It's all OCZ Platinum XTC (both the 1Gb and 2Gb modules.), which means they pair up and work with the same timings etc – very nicely in fact.
From what I've seen though, there's no discernable difference from having a 4Gb total setup to a 6Gb setup. So I’m inclined to conclude that in today’s world, there’s no real benefit of having more that 4Gb? Someone got an example of where it is useful ?

Most definately if you are into using applications like 3DStuidoMax or Maya. I've noticed a huge difference when navigating a large complex .MB scene on my PC compared to a Workstation with a 12Gb's.
Also i've noticed when I work with a number of Hi-Rez PSD files in photoshop, it can easily used 2-2.5Gb's just for detailing textures on a 8192x8192 canvas.

This can easily use up all my 4Gb's of ram. Photoshop using 2Gb's, OS using roughly 300-500mb, Maya using 1Gb etc

Spose you're right, effects you mostly with multiple windows open. IE, you've got 3DSMax open and Photoshop at the same time texturing.

I guess it boils down to what you use your PC for.

Seems like the following conclusion then:
PowerUser 4Gb+
Gamer 4Gb Max.

I will be using my pc for when I study...
I'll be going for my "BTEC National Diploma in Games Development"
And we will be using programs like C++, Blitzbasic, 3dstudiomax, Soft image and lightwave...
So I need all the RAM I can get

for VT i definitely would go 6 or even 8...

No games really support six gigs now, maybe later but for now 4Gs is enough and ddr2 is soooo cheap I payed about R200 for my kingston 2x2gig sticks. And all my games run perfectly.

I run 8gb of DDR3 and it's a pretty sweet spot for me :p

You bastard.

I'm sitting on 4GB but Im running Win 7 32, so Im only getting 3GB.

I was hesitant to install Win 64 not knowing if it would be stable, but people are raving about it so I will definitely buy it when it launches, along with another 4GB of 1600DDR3.

ampt.

My sytems using 4g I using w 7 86 and my games run very smoothly on all the settings on high.

Yup yup that's me :D I've been using Vista 64 for quite awhile now, and so no issues to change to Win7 just yet :)
What ram u running btw? I'm using Corsair Dominators

i have 6 gigs in my i7 and 8 gigs in the phenom 2 and i really dont notice a difference in performance at all (yes 64bit osses on both machines)

I have 4GBs of Mushkin 1600MHz DDR3, cant remember the specific models...

A little off topic here - Has anyone else experienced issues with DDR3 at 1600 on AM3 Motherboards? I have to run mine at 1066 otherwise its unstable. I looked around and it seems liek a fairly common problem that AMD has to address.

And a question, in regards to Win32 only seeing 3GB, does that include graphics memory?

4gb is allready too much for me I think. I've been running with a little bit over 2gb (2.50 I think, don't remeber) just fine for the last year, only reason I realy want to upgrade my ram is to improve preformance with 3Ds max renders.
