Motherboard options?

Hey guys, my bro is looking for a new motherboard option - and I've decided to outsource the knowledgeable answer to the sharp MyGaming community ;)

What would you guys/girls recommend for motherboards in terms of reliability and usage? Maybe any experience advice with Gigabyte, Asus, MSi etc?

I will personally buy any Gigabyte or ASUS motherboard, I love both those brands. I think we may need some more details:
- Which socket do you need?
- What is your budget
- Any specific requirements (e.g. SATA3, USB3, amount and speed of PCI-x)

Then we can get more specific!

Well it depends on your budget but I will not exclude the AS rock series. Their boards are really bang for the buck. Also we need to know what its used for Gaming, rendering etc?

haha sorry but I can't help it why post this in the pc gaming thread? And not in the hardware section :p

I normally check out MSI boards first I find them the easiest to set up. Also finding drivers for it is so easy.

Gigabyte and Asus For quality, Gigabyte is usually a bit cheaper than Asus, Intel has some decent boards as well in the medium to high range but for high end you might as well just go for on of the others then. (I have a intel burrage DP67BG and have had no issues)

msi, well Im not very fond of them but their high end stuff usually gets very good reviews

Thanks - will chat to my bro and get the specs of what he uses/needs :)

I am a huge MSI fan. I have never had any problems with their products, and there are lots of little things, like a removable pinout for your case headers, that just keep me coming back.

Some MSI boards aren't so good for overclocking, but others are, so if that's something you're looking at doing, make sure to read up. All in all, the brands listed in this thread thus far are all very good quality.

The price range willing to spend is range is R3000-R3500 with intel z77 or x79.

Currently looking at ASrock, MSI, Asus and Gigabyte or is there something else to consider?

For that price you'll get an excellent board. I'd say 4 DIMM slots should be fine, get 2 sticks of RAM, and you'll have 2 free for future upgrades. Most the ones with 8 slots are mad overkill and just a waste of cash. Is he planning on going SLI? If so, stick with the x79 since it has the proper amount of bandwidth on the PCI-ex bus for 2+ cards, while the Z77 will get bottlenecked.

I can vouch for the Asus Sabertooth Z77. Solid quality. 5 year warranty. Looks great.

X 79 allows 2 vga cards each running at 16x. z77 can only run 1 card at 16x, or 2 cards at 8x. But dont stress, i doubt you would see any difference unless you were going to run sli gtx 680s or greater.

I would say a z 77 board would be slightly more future proof, but neither LGA 1155 nor 2011 will be around for much longer.

All other aspects of the board are your preference mate. Good luck. And please dont waste money on an i7 for gaming.

If I may :)

Z77 socket 1155
X79 2011

R3000 - R3500 is a lot of money for a motherboard.
I would skip Asus and Gigabyte and go straight for a ASRock board

Boards I would recommend:

ASRock Z77 OC Formula R2800
ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional R2450

ASRock X79 Extreme9 LGA2011 R3600
GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4 LGA2011 R3350
