On Monday, 31 October 2011, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) will be sending a national team, sponsored by Megarom Games, to compete in the 2011 IeSMoD World Championships to be held in the Aewol Stadium, Jeju, South Korea from 1 to 5 November 2011.

The IeSMoD (International e-Sports Meets of the Disabled) will have its first World Championship hosted by KoDeF (Korea Disabled e-Sports Federation). Sponsored by NEOWIS, NEXON, and BLIZZARD, the vision in holding such games is to achieve healthy social integration, create new leisure and aim for social participation between disabled and non-disabled people.

Over 200 Disabled e-Sports players from 20 different countries will participate in the event, with the event being supported by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Although KoDeF will provide various activities such as Olleh Walk and Face painting, etc. for the participants, the International Disabled e-Sports Federation will be established during the event.

Disabled e-Sports was adopted as a competitive sport in the 2009 Youth Sports for Disabled in Korea.

The president of KoDeF (Korea Disabled e-Sports Federation), Lim Yun Tae said, “the significance of e-Sports is more for rehabilitation than just leisure”. He too stated, “e-Sports can improve upon communication and lead to a lively interchange between Korean and foreign disabled people”.

Although the South African team has not been awarded Protea Colours, the team of two players have been awarded the next best thing -National Federation Colours.

Both gamers who were selected: Jason van Belkum (from Durban) and Jacobus Engelbrecht (from Worcester) are both excited about going and being part of something that will far reaching and have a profound influence on the lives of many in the years to come.

Although excited, both gamers know that the opposition will be stiff as they come face-to-face with gamers who they have previously only heard about.

The MSSA is, however, confident that both Jason and Jacobus will give it their all and represent South Africa to the best of their abilities.

Good luck to both of them, it's actually great to see people representing our country in the international scene. I encourage everyone to lend them as much support as possible, regardless of how well they do in the competition.

The team is doing very well. Even after a vey long flight, Jacobus has already earned a spot in the finals for Kartrider.

Viva SA! Viva!
