Yeah, funny enough, our school had about 5 drummers, and 1 other guitarist. Only when I was matric two other guitarists popped up.. By then both me and my friend had the basics down, so we decided to trade lessons. He'll teach me drums if I teach him guitar. I can't hold anything other than the most basic 4/4. I just can't get my right foot to fire at a different time than my right arm! :D :D :D

That's the coolest thing about playing an instrument, you never stop learning something new, and it gets you to enjoy and listen to music in a completely new way. I'd highly recommend it for anyone even remotely interested in music to pick up any instrument, even if it's just for 6 months. Even drums. :p

What type of music do you play? How long have you been playing guitar?
 
I mostly listen to metal as well (enjoy most subgenres except black, there are exceptions of course), but I will listen to most music if it sounds good to me.

Also a big fan of 80's pop, hip-hop and trance/dubstep.

Currently listening to a lot of Caliban, Rise to Remain and Holy Guile.
 
I haven't gone through this whole thread so excuse me if this has been covered.

Here's what I'm listening to at the moment - the 2011 re-recording of Dante's Inferno by Iced Earth with their (then) new singer Stu Block (Into Eternity fame).

The band's line-up hasn't been entirely stable over the past few years, but the core remains with the musical mastermind Jon Schaffer leading the band.

Truly one of the greatest metal epics created:


I remember reading somewhere that the reason they re-recorded the song with Stu Block is because it's going to go back on their touring songs rotation after many many years of absence. As you can imagine, it's a fan favourite, but apparently the band had trouble keeping time throughout the 16 minute epic. New technology has fixed this problem. Their 2014 Dystopia tour may be the last time the band performs it live, but this could also be a neat marketing line. I'd definitely be interested in making a pilgrimage to a European metal fest to see this.

Depends on which guitar I pick up and what mood I'm in :) On my electric it's usually rock and lighter metal (think Alter Bridge and Muse), my acoustic is classics, classic rock, poppigh things, a bit of blues, and just masturbating mostly. I've been at it since 2001, so coming up on 13 years now, but I neglected my guitars this past year, so I'm rusty as a surfer's car in Durban.

And you? How long, what genre's, bands? Do drummers still break and lose all their sticks, or has someone found a cure for that?

Haha! Classic! I remember this when I started to play drums at about 16 y/o and when I overcame it I was like fck yeaaah!! Bought a drumkit, neighbours complained, I hit a brick wall where inspiration and motivation is concerned and recently just sold my kit.. Didn't help much that I had very little rhythm too... Aaah the pretentious teen years.. :/

I've been drumming for 7 years now. I'm probably the best at metal than any other genre. I love the speed and technicality behind the music.

I'm able to play many styles eg metal, rock, jazz, some cuban etc, but I prefer sticking to metal.

I do still break sticks because when I play shows, I play to almost break the kit. People paid to see a show and I put on a show.

Damn dude, that's sick!

Only been playing for about a year. Played bass for much longer though. Clearly people HERE don't appreciate the rhythm section though! :thumbdown:

I don't have rhythm, if we have to clap and sing in church , I can't do it , I can only do one at a time,
I think some people are born with rhythm and that are the people with music talent, they are also the people that appreciate this kind of video.

That's where joining a band comes in! I can't remember where I read it, but some guide to playing guitar said,
* Always play with someone better than you. You will learn by watching them.
* Always play with someone you are better than. You will learn from their watching you.

It's very true, and trying to overcome the inspiration wall together is much more efficient!

Yowser! Pretty good, guy, pretty good! Do you play full time? Cause that's very impressive for 7 years' playing! As a matter of taste, I prefer my drumming with more rolls, less 16th's, but hells, I can appreciate talent!!

Thanks for the kind words!

For the first 5 years of my drumming career, I played in a melodic hardcore band and then moved over to a deathcore.

So I was playing at least 3 shows a month for 5 years. Got me to know a lot of people and a lot of musicians.

Sadly, the metal broke up at the end of 2012 and I haven't been able to find a stable band since then.

Not to be rude, but I will not join a band with teenagers in them. Being 21 now, I have my own equipment, own transport and own source of income. I need members with the same criteria who also have talent in playing and writing music.

I have an audition on Saturday for a well-known Cape Town metal band which I'm confident will go well.

How long did it take you to master the dubble bass pedal? My brain is wired crappy and could never do something proper :/ I'm an amateur musician ( guitarist, bassist and a very little bit of drums)

To be comfortable at those speeds (~220 bpm), I practiced with certain routines for about 3 years before being able to do that.

Since becoming that comfortable, I have worked on new techniques and reaching higher speeds.

I'd be more than happy to post a video with my practice routine?

Also, I created a thread called Musicians of MyGaming if you would like to chat more on topic :)

The reality behind it is lots and lots of practice.

A slow but consistent drummer is better than a fast but sloppy drummer.

But it is so rewarding once you have it down. I'm also working on heel toe techniques to reach higher speeds.
 
How many fans of Guano Apes are there in here? Haven't listened to them in a very long time. Perhaps it's time to blow the dust some of my older CD's
