MW2 - Better view of latency

Found this guide on reddit to give a better view of the latency to the peers or cloud or what ever you want to call it. It would be interesting to see what you guys get. I haven't bought the game yet so I can't try this. Anyone care to try it out?

The reason you think you are getting decent latency without this trick is because of lag compensation.

Lag compensation is good in the sense that it you don't have to lead your shots as a sniper to get a head shot, BUT, there's the very serious problem that each player is literally playing the game in different points in time in comparison to the host.

That's how you end up with those strange situations where you get headshotted after you broke line of sight with a sniper.

Lag compensation is ideal in sub 80ms environments. It gets rid of that slight delay so you don't have to lead your shots a tiny bit when someone is running, but when people are at 100ms+, you get some very retarded results that wouldn't fly in a competitive match.

Basically your being deceived into thinking your not lagging, you are.

Thanks. I found this very interesting.

This is probably why console gamers always think that playing internationally is fine and that "there's no lag" :D

In general, there's a little less upstream on console, so the playing environment is a bit different.

Here's a challenge for you (and anyone else slagging off console gaming online) - and I really do mean this sincerely. Go over to a friend who plays online with a PS3 or Xbox, and join an international server. You've got high latency, absolutely, but in games with great netcode like Halo 3 and MW2, it's so well compensated that you just don't feel it at all. I've clocked around 6 hours of online play in MW2 now, mostly on international servers, and had only one really laggy game (where I still managed to place second, so lag notwithstanding, my shots were connecting).

It annoys me that so many (exclusively) PC gamers assume console gamers are ignorant morons when it comes to the technicalities of online play and whatnot. Lots of us are PC gamers too. :|

some of us own 3 systems. and i can agree with Azimuth (shock horror). Games like Halo 3, Killzone 2 and such have amazing net codes that help with the lag, but sadly to disagree aswell it's just not as good as having a local server to play on

Heh, I've had far more laggy games playing on IS and SGS than on Xbox Live. :P

I have 4 systems. I had Xbox Live for a year.

And yes, you do notice the lag.

You do lag, your just not made aware of it, its one of those ignorance is bliss situations (I don't mean that in an insulting way). A fair amount of your deaths, especially in 1v1 scenarios, could be blamed on it.

Can we stay on topic? I'm more interested in results. The reason it's posted in the PC section is because I doubt the console game's config files can be edited. The method of antilag used doesn't really matter as both types result in a better experience if there is lower latency.

By both types of antilag I mean client side and server side. Perhaps this uses a combination of the two like some other games.
