MWeb or Afrihost for Gaming

I have a 2mb uncapped account with Mweb for ages now...and never had a single day om complaint! Like Glordit said, look after your line, they look after you.
always seemed to have less latency issues than most friends I game with as well.... mweb is very focused on gamers, which is a big up for me...they trying top get some good stuff off the ground for us gamers...

Checked out the mweb pagem they say there internet is R199 per month 1mb uncapped, R2 pm more expensive :p and that is their "best value" the 2mbps is R40 pm more, surely that would be their "best value" product

This might sound rather ignorant but I have never heard of them before. We use Afrihost at work and haven't had any problems with them which is why I am considering them and then the other big player being Mweb.

open web have been around for a while already, wasa client of them at one stage as well.

I have tried most of the different ISP except Axxess lately, and still found Mweb to be best...

I am still happy with Telkom as my isp for gaming with low latency and price with the DO packages and the 25% discount on top of it.

I'm quite happy with WebAfrica. I changed from a 50GB to uncapped ADSL recently, and it turned out to R60 less per month. The 50GB account would have gone to 10Mbps, and the uncapped is 4Mbps, but I seem to get the same speeds as I was getting before, sometimes over 5Mbps.

I'm also getting much better ping times than I did before they moved onto the IS backbone since traffic doesn't have to make a round trip past Cap Town anymore.

I went through over 80GB last month, and I was still 5/5* for good data usage. I'm on about 40GB this week, and they dropped me to 4/5*, which means I'm still perfectly fine, but that's quite a heavy week, and I'll probably be back to 5* soon. How they seem to work is that if there is major congestion on the network, then they will throttle the biggest bandwidth hogs first (1/5*) to lower speeds.

I currently use an Afrihost 1 mb uncapped account and have been really happy with them. Average around 175GB per month and only seem to get shaped when the whole network is having issues, which has been happening for around a week now although the last time this sort of thing happened they gave all their account holders discounts for a month.

Also if you do have issues you can always switch to their free 1 GB account, which won't be shaped, for some smoother gaming.

BIt of thread necro, but its cool.

I'm actually moving away from an uncapped account. I was on mweb 4mb premium uncapped, and its just too expensive to justify considering my usage, anything from 30gigs to 140gigs per month. I'm going Afrihost capped, 100gig or 75gig. Haven't decided yet.

On a side note, how the EF do you do 175GB on a 1mb line?!? Seriously

Felt like throwing in my 2c on the subject considering I posted something similar in another thread.

That is the problem with uncapped 4mb accounts, not enough usage to justify the price difference from 1/2 mb accounts. If you really want that speed you are better off with a capped account or get a 2 mb uncapped and wait until Jan/Feb for speed increase to 4mb (which is what telkom is promising)

And doing that usage is not terribly difficult as I have friends without uncapped and they ask me to dl stuff for them.

I also want to retract my previous statement about Mweb :(

I have been on the mweb 2mb premium package for a long time....play well and had no lag. I recently upgraded my line to 4 meg speed and upgraded my 2 meg premium to 4 meg standard...and the lag began! The price difference between premium and standard is not justifieable as I dont really download as much...speed is more for competetive gaming. The standard packages suck! Literally the moment I changed accounts on routerI started to Lag...

So i tried the Axxess package...took the 3 GB free trial...their latency is fantastic...so far. So closed my account after years with mweb and moved to Axxess....

The other issues with the standard package is the threshhold before they start shaping / throttling you is a major secret...they cant tell you. Seeing as I almost never buy hard copies anymore...only digital copies..and the said copies being normally large in size...buying one or 2 games will result in me being throttled until end of the month. See instances where people saying they start getting throttled at 10-15 gb...others at 30 gb

So will try axxess for a while, and afrihost if needed. Also axxess is offereing static Ip's...

The standard packages are ridiculous. It's similar to Web Africa's uncapped. They throttle and shape theirs to shit too. How's cybersmart?

I was on Mweb's 1Mb uncapped premium - until I got shaped because of usage. I find that strange, since all their 1Mb packages are premium why do they shape them?

Forked out extra and shifted up to 2mb/s have not had any problems so far, this month. The jump is not that huge, my ping went from 60 to 50-45 and downloads cap in at max of around 240 Kb/s. I have heard from a friend that deals with Mweb as a client that only the 1Mb premium accounts where being shaped, I will have to wait and see.

Yeah bud, I upgraded my line speed to 4mb, and the price difference does not warrant the extra cost....as far as I was concerened a 4mb line should be plenty to compensate for any issues...but unfortunately, the instant I changed (I mean the INSTANT) i changed the account details on my router the latency became unbelievable. My 2mb premium account I never had any issues with, latency was brilliant...seeing as I didint really download much I never had throttling issues. What is concerning is that they cant tell you at what cap usage do they start throttling you...which tells me there is none, and they just throttle whoever they feel like to compensate for usage.

SO trying axxess for now and very happy with my 4mb uncapped package so far...

Why would pings go down even? More prioritised bandwidth?

Well i can with disappointment say not afrihost or mweb seeing as i have a premium uncapped with mweb and i do an avg of 170Gb a month, now all of a sudden i'm being throttled so badly on a 2mb line that i download at .24kb/s so after inquiring about it i was informed that i'm in the top 1% of high users on my package, does that mean they only have a client base of 1K?

So i moved over to Afrihost and that was an even worse mistake, been there for 2 months now and the most i've been able to do is 50Gb over 2 months because their lines are permanently shaped because of bandwidth allocation problems from mtn.

Try openweb i have a few friends with them no issues and i now have an account with them too and it already feels much better than the other 2 is's
