MWEB shaped uncapped - gaming revisited

If been using MWEB from day 3 about, and thus far im very happy. on my 512kb Line I have a constant 53-60kb Download on Steam and no problems with games being shaped.

I really started buying of Steam and PSN since I got the Uncapped Line!

Once you go uncapped you cant go back :)

Must say, I moved over about 2-3 months ago and I'm on the 512 uncapped shaped service. I avg about a 100GB per month. Extremely happy.

Steam DLs also at abt 50kb/s, torrents up to 45-50 and gaming no issue. Gaming includes Blops, BC2 and soon homefront. Only place where gaming is a no go is any SGS servers and they are no loss to me.

been on the shaped 512k uncapped for a year now. loving the service.

only thing that get's me is when someone accesses bloody failbook games i get lag spikes from hell...

I've been resisting the impulse to go the uncapped route. I'd love the extra capacity, but since I mostly play MMOs, that extra latency Nic noticed in WoW is a killer for me. So I'll prefer to stick with the capped options for now. Not Afrihost though - unshaped or not, they are NOT good for MMO gaming.

Nah, the peace of mind not having to watch every little kilobit that gets used is such a relief. I can game to my hearts content with never a worry about reaching cap.

I have used various accounts over the last few years, and I am still pretty impressed with mweb's shaped uncapped account. Apart from the occasional seacom and IPC node issues they experienced last year it's pretty stable. The new house is defiantly going to have the 4MB shaped uncapped with mweb :)

My only issue is I can not play anything if my wife is using the notebook to browse. Pings go through the ceiling. That is on a 512k line. Really thought that that shouldn't be such a train smash, but alas, it is unplayable then.

Yup ... its in those cases where a 4MB line is an absolute blessing.

That's not something Mweb can fix DenSweep (nor should they try). That's a congestion problem. At 512k downspeed, browsing will easily congest your line.

Your options are really upgrading to >=4mb or getting a router with QoS. Configuring QoS correctly though is tricky and its basically like shaping your own traffic before it leaves your network. On my own LAN for instance I prioritize gaming and lump HTTP together with torrents.

I've been on 384k uncapped since about a month after the service was launched and for the most part it's been great. You truly can't go back once you've gotten accustomed to uncapped. :D

That's now if you have a router that supports decent QoS features :D

Been on the 4mb uncapped since it launched and never had any issues( excluding seacom problems but that's not mweb's fault). Once you go uncapped you don't go back.

Thought I am sure the local gaming retailers don't like it since it has caused them to lose a customer...

So who is better, MWEB or Afrihost? I can't decide on who to go with, I've heard horror stories about both ISP's :(. But I'm really feeling the need to upgrade from my kak 9gig cap!

Afrihost uses the IS protocals for their shaping and throttling. Haven't use afrihost myself from what I hear open web and mweb are much better then the IS based uncapped accounts.

I don't think that either one is really that much better or worse than the other. In fact, both are actually pretty good, except Afrihost has some pretty severe restrictions on their uncapped offerings. As purely value for money, I would go with Mweb. As an avid online gamer, I would also go with Mweb, especially considering how they are getting into server hosting for local gaming. As someone who downloads a lot, Mweb.
