MWEB's R219 uncapped ADSL and gaming

I've only ever used Telkom, Absa and Axxess as my ISP, how is Afrihost compared to those? In terms of Downtime / Latency

Is this a limited time offer or is it a new product that hey will offer indefinitely?

Its permanent. They have removed all their previous capped pricing points except for the 1,2 and 3 gig accounts. Everyone with a higher capped account currently will be moved to uncapped.

Can't say I've had a problem with AfriHost. In fact, I experience less issues using AfriHost than I do with Telkom ISP.

For example, annoying errors like Facebook pokes not sending happen with Telkom. As soon as I switch to AfriHost the problem is solved.

Speaking of AfriHost, I see that they have decided to announce their uncapped offering on Tuesday.
I hope for their sake that it works for them.

Yeah Open web have also announced they will be matching mweb and vox isp is offering a cheaper pricing point.

Yeah, I'm actually glad I didn't sign up with MWEB yet, if I had to choose I'd go for Afrihost. I hope their pricing is at least in line with MWEB's, they did say they would at least match it.

That's actually a good thing ;)
Mweb started the price war, so I'm supporting them. Clearly they didn't have to...

Yip same here, going with the guys that started it all, amazing how suddenly out of nowhere three ISP's are able to give an uncapped ADSL at a low price where they couldn't before.

We locked ourselves into a Closer contract back in 2007. Was a very good decision..."free" router, free calls after 7 and on weekends, DSL line rental and (now) 3 gigs of data. We use waaay more than that so we buy data from other ISP's.

Think that contract has expired now, though.

What specifically don't you like about it Larch. From what I read its pretty much standard terms that all isp's that offer uncapped bandwith use.

1. Getting your line separately from you ADSL account is always recommended the bundles that include internet connection and ADSL line give them the power over what you do with the line. Meaning you will have to jump though hoops to get the line upgraded.

2. It is shaped and some games just dont perform online so well when using shaped versus unshaped, because the ports get throttled or closed so it might cause issue with some games.

3. "You have 20 gig limit every 10 days and if you exceed 20 gig in 10 days your speed is halved for the next 10 days "

4.
You may not restrict, inhibit or interfere with the ability of any person to access, use or enjoy the Internet or the ADSL Services, or create an unusually large burden on our network, including, without limitation, continuously uploading or downloading streaming video or audio; continuous FTP uploading or downloading, or otherwise generating levels of traffic sufficient to impede others' ability to send or retrieve information, or to use the ADSL Services in an abusive manner in connection with any unlimited packages, options or promotions.

5. Does not support concurrent connections.

2. I was under the impression that it would only be shaped during business hours.

5. I think that is perfectly reasonable from a business point of view.

1.You don't have to use that option. Its just feature some isp's offer. We don't use that package. For the exact reasons you mentioned.

2.Its shaped during business hours, unshaped during of peak times. But yeah it might not be ideal for gaming at certain times but then if that's an issue you can either go for the more expensive business uncapped which isn't shaped or get a seperate unshaped capped account for gaming. It has its pro's and its cons.

3. I have read this but haven't found any reliable source to confirm this. Even if it is the case I don't think for most users that 20 gig for 10 days will be a major issue.

4. As their ceo explained this is just to safeguard the network from guys abusing it. Unless you go overboard its unlikely that they will have an issue. Most US and EU isp's also have this clause in their terms and conditions.

5. This isn't going to affect the consumer much. How many people need to be connected at two locations at the same time?? You can still have more than one pc connected you just connected the different pc's to the router and use ppoe connections via the router.
