MWEB's R219 uncapped ADSL and gaming

My cuz got the MWEB uncapped 384, and he says the performance is way off, in comparison to his per cap offering. Something about not being able to download at full line speed, and max speed he gets is 20Kb/s. Anyone expierence the same, cause i am hearing complaints. I was going to take the uncapped 4096 but changed mymind when i heard most people not getting full download speed.

If he is trying to download p2p or torrents during peak hours that would explain it. People are saying its slow during the day due to the shaping as expected. Its fine during of peak hours.

I haven't had any speed issues, performance is pretty much on par with when we had the capped mweb account and with my capped afrihost account but that's with normal http downloads.

Tonight was the first time in a while I've noticed slightly higher local latencies. I haven't changed to one of the new uncapped deals, still running on my regular Axxess account (IS Backbone).

It went up from 29ms ping to axxess to 39ms. Not a major cause for concern by itself and still well within acceptable. The concerning bit is that there is now quite a bit of jitter, small spikes up to 150ms (locally). I'm going to keep an eye on it, as some porn could have been sneakily downloading itself on my line. If it rises further it could a sign of congestion. Its worrying as I suspect there are going to be a lot more takers come April/May.

Of course, porn is sneaky like that - you never find out until its too late :p

I'm expecting things to become a little jittery in the coming months - especially with all these new deals popping up; there are going to be a lot of new takers, and of course, download junkies testing capacities. We still have another set of cables landing though, later this year, so things should ease off a bit after the FWC.

Well, last night I got MyGaming's test account to test various MMO's and EISH lol. It was so slow. I was attempting to patch games and it kept on timing out etc.

Apparently a load of people were noticing slow-than-usual speeds last night, though, so it looks like it was an anomaly. My line is getting progressively better as today goes along thankfully. Hopefully tonight isn't a repeat of last night :)

you're remote must have been scrambled, there is no throttling planned for Mweb or Afrihost

Read Mweb's Terms and Conditions on their "uncapped" policy. Make your own assumptions on previous experiences with Mweb, if you have had the misfortune. In a few months the real deals should be on the table.

Ever heard the expression "assumptions lead to the mother of all fuckups?"

Regardless of whether or not they cap you after 100 or a few hundred gigs, the fact of the matter is that:

1) Acceptable use policies exist the world over
2) The CEO himself has said that they only go after people hosting servers etc. using their MWeb lines, as that is not what these lines are meant for
3) We are now paying FAR less than we were a week ago. People seem to forget quickly, and love to jump on the negative nelly bandwagon, which I find quite pathetic

One thing I cannot stand is people who complain, and then complain when something comes along to save them from what they were complaining about. You can never please some people  Disgusting.

With any new service like this there is bound to be some teething issues. As long as they sorted out the problems timely there is no big cause for concern.

So far I am happy with the performance.

well said and i agree with you 100%
what a bunch of whiners
enjoy what u have now cause u didnt have it before

Afrihost also has a good deal now. Wonder how soon the others will follow?

I got the Afrihost uncapped 4mb today. So far im very impressed with it. Cant see that ill use 100's of GBs but i mean MW2 hosting takes a shite load. 22gb only last month.

Hmmm ive been noticing recently that the torrents are going about half the speed during peak hours with my IS account... which hasnt been happening before. I wonder if the saix uncapped accounts will allow almost full speeds during the day since its shaped. My IS account drops to half the speed when downloading...

I got my Mweb account up and running , and Already got a steady few gigs of PS3 Demos lined up , as well as some free Asian RPGs!

I havn't experienced any Shaping on my Torrents yet , so not sure what all the other people are complaining about. Unless I'm just lucky :p

Turns out it wasn't MWeb's fault. They detected we were accessing the account from another phone line on the opposite side of the country and throttled it heavily.

So far my mates who have MWeb accounts are very happy with them and notice no difference between service levels before the uncapped products were released, and afterwards. That is a relief as I was getting worried they'd bitten off more than they could chew :D

Ok, now I'm starting to become a little more concerned. Local latencies had stabilized at about 33ms, but today and in particular tonight, I'm getting an average local latency of 110-130ms, definitely a sign of congestion, either at my exchange or on the IS backbone.

is loving the AfriHost uncapped. Using Miro I downloaded 6gigs of videos without a worry in the world... aaah the freedom...
