My Thoughts on DLC

yes fair enough, Borderlands might be the exception here. but there is no excuse for games like Dishonored imo

What was wrong with Dishonored's DLC? Aside from the Voidwalker Arsenal DLC I thought it was pretty fair. The Dunwall City Trials weren't unfairly priced for a challenge map pack and both the two story DLCs were amazingly well priced for what they gave in return.

I honestly don't mind paying $10 for about 4 or 5 hours of extra entertainment. That's cheap when you consider that back in the old days we were often paying the same price as a new game for boxed expansions that added between 10-15 hours of content.

but the base game was VERY short

One of the things I hate most about DLC is planned DLC. It is totally up to the publisher if they desire to add DLC after the fact; however there are few things as scumbaggy as shaving content off your base product just to make a quick buck.

my opinion, all DLC's should be free. I already bought the game, so why do I have to pay more to get the rest of the game :D

Now that is a good point. I have to agree, DLC should be free, but some DLC should be expansion packs and could be paid for.

Friggin Civilization 5 is a prime example of milking gamers. Base game is $29.99, Complete Edition is $49.99. However Brave New World and Gods and Kings are listed as DLC where it should be marketed as expansion packs. The rest of the DLC for Civ 5 is map and scenario packs @ $4.99 a pop on average.

I can appreciate DLC that extends the game/story. That's exciting. I can't understand separate paid gun/map packs, though. Isn't that supposed to be free? Surely is nothing changes but the maps and guns, it should be a free update and not something that you need to buy.

Other things that I find wrong is buying XP and in-game money. Sleeping Dogs had a packs like that, which is basically a shortcut and you feel like you haven't achieved something. That makes me think of using a cheatcode, but paying for the result.

Essentially a lot of the cosmetics are things that could have been easily turned over to the community to handle as in the days of old; however they figured out that as long as people are willing to pay for it why not profit from it.

They won't since the dlc brings in a constant steam of money. The one thing I hate is more like what borderlands 2 did bring out a GOTY and then after that still bring more dlc out. Also wtf is with day one dlc?
I believe they used to call them day one updates until they realized that they could sell them :D

Makes you wonder what 2020 holds in store

We have to look at how all this started to see where its going to end.

1st came piracy and 2nd hand sales, and Dev's wanted to prevent it. So some bright spark came up with the idea of including extra content on disks that activate with a code. If you bought the original you get the code to unlock extra maps/weapons or whatnot.

Then the hackers got clever and started giving pirates access to the content as well. So in order to prevent this Dev houses started hosting activated content on servers in the cloud. 2nd hand buyers got upset on this move and demanded access so developer let them buy said content for a minimal ammount. -Paid for DLC was born.

Developers saw that this model worked and moved the old expansion packs onto the same servers calling DLC as well. It was a briliant move for them as they could still cash in on second hand sales and limit access to pirates.

Sadly the hackers also adapted and you can now download games with the DLC's in and active. The dev houses tried to combat sale loss of this as people find it easier to just download 1 game. Dev awnser was GOTY editions that have 1st year's DLC in them and releasing smaller packs to keep people going.

The problem now is that its a plague that is here to stay.... well unless we the gamers stop supporting them.

Yet the people who pay the most are the legitimate customers bec it hasn't stopped the pirates at all.

The only way to ensure that someone won't pirate your content is to never release any at all."whistling:. CDProjektlernt this lesson and they are doing reasonably well for themselves. [And they don't really release DLC]
