MyGaming Activity: Ideas and Discussion

My fellow MyGaming Forumites

The MyGaming forum has become my online home. Here I have met some incredible people, and have made some great friends. MyGaming is probably the only site I visit every day for the past 2 years without exception, be that only reading or posting as well.

Unfortunately the past few months has been unkind to the frequency of posting from people here on the forum. In this time there has been many activity based competitions to not only draw in more posters, but also attract newbies as well. Some competitions has been more successful than others, and there are a few new faces that frequent the site. While these competition has proven to increase the posting in the forum during these events, the activity dies down quickly after they are concluded. Ultimately, more traffic to the forum means more traffic to the site as well, which helps the good people at MyGaming HQ as well.

So, over the weekend I was thinking about this dilemma, and what can we do as a community to try and increase the activity generated by the forums. The ideas I have is not a "brute force posting" approach, but more a subtle way of increasing ways in which the community can interact with each other, participate in events and ultimately share experiences and opinions here on the forum. I believe that in that way we will be able to convert more readers into regular posters. The purpose of this thread is to discuss and come up with ideas that you may have about what can be added or done to increase activity within the forum.

So, here are some of the ideas I have come up with:
(Please note these are completely open for discussion and critique)

MyGaming Leaderboards

This section can my community managed/curated Leaderboards for certain games. Already there is a type of level race going on the the Diablo thread. So this section is dedicated to create some spirited competition between the members of the MyGaming community to see who can reach the highest point of the various gaming leaderboards for each month/week. Should you then be the overall leader for a time period (like a month) you can receive a badge/trophy that is displayed on your MyGaming forum profile for all to see.

Each leaderboard can have it own scores and rules, as many games doesn't really have a leaderboard readily available. These leaderboard rules and scores can be decided on by the community, and maintained by a particular person

MyGaming Community Leaderboards

These leaderboards can work in the same way as the gaming leaderboards as discussed above, but will be based upon community activity. For example, we can have Most Hours, Most Games, Most Challenges, Most Event Wins leaderboards. These leaderboards can also give the winner for a time period (like a month or week) an honor badge to proudly display in their profile, or even in their forum signature.

All these leaderboards can have discussion threads where you can have a chat with the various members participating in the leaderboards. Any disputes of score or positioning can be taken up with the curator or the leaderboard via PM.

MyGaming Gaming Events/Competitions/Challenges

Weekly, people of the community can host Events within specific games to attract various players into a particular game. The community can create events where a bunch of MyGaming forumites come together to join in on some multiplayer fun.

It will also be possible to post gaming challenges to the forum. Challenges can be game specific, and we can monitor how many challenges each person completed in a month via the MyGaming Community Leaderboards

Competitions can also be held for particular games, where the forum comes together to see who is the best in a specific game. This game may even change from week to week to ensure everyone gets the opportunity to play with.

All these accomplishments can be put together into a single article that get's published on the main MyG site, showcasing to all it's readers the community activity and leaderboards, and create even more competition and challenges per month.

MyGaming Video of the Week

Weekly this thread will encourage people to share with the community their greatest/funniest/weirdest gaming experience of the week. At the end of the week the MyG staff can publish an article highlighting the top 5 videos of the week onto the main site, and these 5 posters may get to win a small prize, like a $10 game or a MyGaming T-shirt or something. At the end of the month we can have the overall videos of the month, and stand a chance to win the overall yearly grand prize.

These prizes may not be possible, but I still think it will be a cool addition to the forum to have these videos captured by our very own gaming community.

MyGaming Moment of the Week/Image of the Week

Same as the Video of the week, but just with screenshots.

MyGaming Reviews

We re-purpose the Rate the last game you played thread to the MyGaming Reviews thread. In this thread the community can write short reviews of games, but each review must adhere to a specific format, length and scoring methodology. We can set it to be at least 2 paragraphs, covering at least gameplay, graphics and story with one screenshot for each, then end the review with a Recommend/Highly Recommend/Avoid rating. At the end of a week, the best reviews can also be added to the MyG main site.

These are all ideas of things we can add/do on this forum to ensure that more content is created for the site, and more people come here on a weekly/daily basis to share or post as often as they want.

Obviously the rules of each idea is completely up for debate.

So please, feel free to comment of the above ideas, or share with us any other ideas you may have for the forum. Ultimately I want to see the MyGaming forum and community grow in strength and numbers, and any ideas to help achieve that is highly recommended.

This is an excellent idea and post DieGrootHammer. Unfortunately don't have the time right now to post comments but will try to do so later. :)

I love this Thread!

This place is awesome and there are so many great people on here! I love reading the articles, comments, and posting here!

The only thing i don't really understand is why everyone disappears unless there is an activity comp on the go... There are the few that have a chat in the TK thread, but mostly people just go into hibernation... It would be great is people posted more regularly! There are often times when I come on here after a comp and there are like 4 active topics... and a lot of the time they have no interest to me...

I really love your ideas to get more activity! Especially the weekly Video one! It would be great to encourage guys to record more of their own game play, and possibly do some streaming, setting up youtube channels etc...

Looking forward to this place being more active more of the time!

What I think is that there is not enough content being created to actively stay and talk about. On TK you always have something to say, because no matter what your opinions or views or personal stuff, you can share it in TK. It's why it's stayed so popular. So what I think is if we can create more threads and content as a community that not only regulars, but all sorts of people can join in, more people will come on and share their ideas, opinions, achievements or stories. That is the inspiration of my ideas thus far.

I couldn't agree more, it seems though that without the incentive of a prize people just dont feel the need to generate content... And how you get people to change that i dont know...

I still think that a long running set of forum games* would be more encompassing. You could do a secret santa type of thing and get a pool of little gifts and knick knacks as a prize (if MyG can't put up anything). Maybe that's too ambitious who knows.

My view on using games and almost 99% sure, Steam, is exclusionary in that not everyone can participate so it becomes a little circle of elitism. Everyone, new and old must and should be able take part from the get go, not just when the method allows it or activity will not be stimulated.

* trivia, free indie games available freely and that type of stuff ..... thought needs to be put into it I guess.

I dissagree with this statement. There is a shitload content being added to the forums every day, the problem is that no-one is interested in discussing said content.

Interesting to hear that. I suppose because Steam is the most widest used platform for PC gaming one usually go to there, but yeah, I don't see why we can't do competitions and stuff with free games available to everyone. And too take it even further, the competitions and leaderboards can be platform specific, so as to ensure that Xbox or PS players are included as well.

Fair enough, though I took a stab at thinking why are people not inclined to post more often, and two things came to mind: either it's because there isn't enough content to post about, or it's because people undervalue their opinions and thoughts on a matter. Sometimes I look at a thread and think "yeah that's what I think as well" and I end up not posting, as why should I restate something already posted. This may deter some new members from posting more often.

Problem with 80% of the content is that it's just copy pasted from other sites. Only time I've seen comments is when MyG staff write articles. Copy paste is lame.

people dont want to post cause there is just one @hole on the site, who keeps going on about competition prizes moaning like a little girl
who cant do anything constructive on the site.

MetalSoup Lol... Dude... :D

Look the copy pasting of other news articles is always going to happen... There will always be someone thats written about something so that the MyGaming guys can find out about it... I love the fact that all the news in the gaming scene is posted here, regardless of where it came from... I love the fact that i don't have to go to 10 different sites, i just come here...

I like the copy & paste articles. I admire @Doch-WP for keeping us up to date and that he does this without any compensation is great. Keep it up mate! I and many others appreciate it.

I also like the whining in TK. I'm one of them. Ha, so there!

MyGaming does need more activity though and DieGrootHammer has posted some great suggestions. Will get to them as soon as I've got more time. :)

Great stuff DieGrootHammer! I like your subtle approach but I'm going to start another thread regarding a brute force posting idea. Just to complement all your great ideas.

So, here are some of the ideas I have come up with:

That will be awesome! I think the biggest problem that people have is that time is limited. But if you play games that you enjoy then that will be great. I saw that MH wasn't too happy about Steam. The thing is that there are free multiplayer Steam games too. Those with consoles can choose console games. Hell, there's even popular web games.

MyGaming Community Leaderboards

These leaderboards can work in the same way as the gaming leaderboards as discussed above, but will be based upon community activity. For example, we can have Most Hours, Most Games, Most Challenges, Most Event Wins leaderboards. Great idea!

Great stuff! There are so many games to choose from and the games can differ from event to event. It sounds like fun! And I suck at multiplayer games. Just ask Tsar.

That's a great easy way to get people involved. I mean we all play games and recording it is so easy these days.

The biggest obstacles will probably to get people to gain interest and also to maintain that interest. Also I know a lot of us are very busy. But those of us who love MyGaming can put in a special effort and see how it goes. I'm prepared to help. So DieGrootHammer, let me know when you need us to do things and lets see who will do what. Is it alright if you lead the whole thing?

I typed out a long, detailed reply that Tapatalk decided to discard. It boils down to better (critic) reviews presented in an engaging manner, integrated with an official thread for each game. But that takes time and costs money to pay industry specialists, so it probably won't work.
