MyGaming suggestion box

I would give my vote for a seperate section as well - Off Topic may well be off topic, but it just jars too much with the rest of the content in my view.

If it's interesting or strange or funny, then I have no real objection to it, but I don't relish seeing general daily news (which in SA seems to consist mostly of politics) on my favourite gaming forum. I already see all of that on News24.

This, the only other gaming news site I read is Kotaku and its become clogged with shit about food, Asia and other very vaguely gaming related stuff. Just because gaming is a digital and maybe geek thing doesn't mean we want to hear about everything related.

It's hardly spam. There are probably 6 updates a day on average. We post a variety of content types too, from local politics to scientific advances and developments.

Can't you guys somehow team up with iol? They put a link to mygaming news and you put a link to 'real' news somewhere on this site?

The IOL suggestion is a good one.

As mentioned, if Off Topic generated so many threads and/or posts each day that entire pages of new content fall off the first page, then yes, we'd create a new section.

Currently this is not the case. At this point in the afternoon, I can still see on the first page a thread with the last post being made yesterday.

We don't implement changes for the sake of it; these things are well considered. It's part of a strategy to keep the forum active and give members more reason to spend time on the site.

.....so what did you think of the game rating example thread? :D

I get what you're saying, and I certainly understand the desire to get more traffic and activity on a site, but from a personal, user perspective, I have different sites I go to for different things - myGaming is my gaming community, News24 is where I go to depress myself, myBroadband used to be where I go for tech news, Cracked is my stop for humour, and then there are a couple of different sites that each serve a purpose - but the point is that I have no desire to see myGaming turn into a jack-of-all-trades type site.

I just don't want to hop into Off Topic to see if anyone's posted anything interesting and see thread upon thread of South Africa's daily dirty laundry. 27 Science Fics Tech that became reality - now that's interesting and worth a read. But seeing Zuma, Malema and Cosatu on the same myGaming page depresses me beyond belief.

Imagine, for instance, if Cracked suddenly started doing news articles about the local politics in the US ... I can guarantee their reader-base would halve overnight. News is not what they do, and general news is not what, I personally feel, myGaming needs to be involved in. If people feel like punishing themselves with discussions about recent events, they can go to myBroadband.

I agree with you.

If MyGaming wants to attract more traffic from gamers, get more gaming/tech/geek related stuff, not news or anything else. It would be nice if MyGaming was more ...interactive... I personally think there must be more posts and updates from MyGaming itself: I frequently visit the site but when I see nothing changed on the front page I close and go somewhere else....

Is it possible to have an instant messenger chatbox of sorts on the homepage of the forum where people can just stop and say hi, maybe have a quick chat? A host of other sites have this feature and it is way more interactive than traditional static threads. I prefer it over an archaic Threadkiller thread...

It's a seperate plugin, and as far as I'm aware myGaming won't install 3rd party plugins on the forum.

This discussion is becoming rather circular. A few extra topics in the Off Topic section is hardly breaking the usability model of MyGaming. As mentioned, we are testing this out to see if it helps bolster traffic and discussions, and perhaps encourages people to post their own discussion topics.

I'm genuinely surprised to see how negatively people are reacting to this. I'm not seeing many logical arguments that apply broadly; the main complaint is along the lines of "I personally don't want to see this topic here because I usually see it on a different website". For every person that doesn't like the topic, there appears to be one that does, and engages with it.

We foster a civilised community on MyGaming, and I would assume people can therefore discuss local current affairs topics in such a manner. It doesn't have to emulate the brutal style of MyBroadband or News24 discussions - if it did, a moderator would step in to keep things civil, or simply lock down the discussion.

The suggestion also seems to be that because a few of the regulars aren't happy with the addition, the content shouldn't be posted for anyone's benefit.

If another member was posting such topics it would be well within their right to do so; in fact I'd encourage it. A forum thrives because the community is active. I'm encouraging activity. If this testing period turns out to be a bad idea for some reason, we'll stop it. If it turns out to be wildly popular, we'll create a new section.

If people don't like the topics, they don't have to reply to them. Lack of replies is a pretty good indicator that a topic is bad. That topic will also fall off the leading discussion in the section pretty quickly as well, and the problem resolves itself.

I personally think there must be more posts and updates from MyGaming itself: I frequently visit the site but when I see nothing changed on the front page I close and go somewhere else....

We typically update with 10 articles a day. Sometimes more, depending on how much news breaks in the gaming world. There are always 4 headline stories per day, including unique local content. *melodramatic falling to knees, shaking fists at the sky* WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM ME!?

There are a few reasons why we wouldn't do this. Most significantly, because it would require a 3rd-party plugin, and those tend to break stuff when there is a core forum software update. Secondly, and also import, a shoutbox doesn't leave us with any lively discussion threads. It's actually a detriment to a lively forum.

Well ... I say "me personally" because, frankly, I can't speak for everyone else on here.

I'm not attacking the implied usability model at all; I'm just saying, I don't see the point. And judging by the reactions, from mostly regulars as you point out, neither do many of the others.

It's also not a case of, as regulars, us demanding that you see things only our way, but, as regulars, we probably feel more comfortable in commenting about this, and we're not going to tiptoe around the myGaming staffers' feelings to get our point across. We dislike something, we say so.

Anyways, I see that some of the topics are 2 days old and have less than 10 replies and less than 100 views - so they're not exactly buzzing with activity. So, in the interests of promoting Off Topic activity, I'll go hunt for funny/interesting things to post.

We've discussed it and it seems like a good idea. I'll think of a uniform system to implement when the next batch of games launches :)

I'm not saying drop it completely just drop the politics. I'd be happy to read science or funny threads. I get what you are saying about the traffic etc. And yes it is a good idea. But generally politics just turns everything sour.

I don't mind a choice off-topic post say once a day or something to that effect. I would prefer it though to maybe be of a 'geeky' origin, science, technology, pop culture, etc... rather than just generally depressing political nonsense.

Either way I wouldn't complain about its existence unless it was shoved in my face, which I do not believe it to be the case at the moment.

I have an idea that will make the Off Topic news posting redundant and that will please some of the regulars.

The MyGaming Awesome Post Initiative. Or um MAPI. Where some of us MyGaming regulars who want to participate write one awesome first post a day. Starting a new thread about something that they find interesting. This continues on for 6 months with a thread where you post a link to your AP to show that you posted it for the day. Everyone who manages to do it for 6 months will go into a lucky draw and the winner um wins something. I can maybe sponsor a small Steam game or something like that.

Unfortunately I have to get ready for work now but I will give more particulars of the idea a bit later today. What do you guys think?

To continue:

Maybe not make it 6 months but rather a quarterly thing. So for 3 months the participants have to create a new thread with a first post that has some content of at least a few sentences. In the hope to generate a discussion.

And we can maybe not make it every day but maybe 4 days a week. If you don't make the 4 days then you are disqualified for the current round. If only one person makes it through to the last day then that person wins the prize. I'll see if I can sponsor a game or maybe MyGaming can get someone to sponsor a game or something similar. James can do a draw to see who wins at the end if multiple people make it.

As a trial run first time around maybe only allow people to enter who have more than 100 posts. This way it will be more manageable.

I'm thinking that:
1. People like competition, especially at a gaming site. This one requires more work but it will make a nice change from the current easy prize draws.
2. It will generate new content and new discussions for MyGaming, increasing traffic which will mean more revenue.
3. Which can only be good for the site and for us.

There can even be small prizes (yes I'm going overboard) for best post of the month as decided by James and his associates or something like that.

How does that sound? Feasible? Worthwhile? Excited? Hungry? ;)

I think this is a great starting point to encourage more content. If we all post stuff, in stead of just James, pretty soon MyG will have the content we like, which solves the whole problem..

Thanks Avatar. I was hoping that more people would reply but I suppose that not a lot of people look at the Suggestions thread.
