MyGaming suggestion box

I've also noticed this happening a lot more than it should. I'm not going to point out any names, but it often seems to be the same groups of people doing it. Especially threads on competitive FPSes tend to turn into threads where certain members decide to catch up with each other's lives.

I did do that once in the Starcraft 2 thread where the topic of lego came up somehow :p

Not going to happen, and if anything I'd bump it up even more so that we get some meaningful comments instead of lolz and smiley faces ;)

OMG, there's a ten character rule, (he says as he starts counting in his head)

No in all seriousness, I would up it to at least 50

/hangs head in shame

I suppose I'm guilty :p

OMF Y'all are all so uptight about the stupidest shit, Eugene and I easily managed to keep to topic while other members where fighting in the avatar thread. (ironicaly doing the very same thing they where complaining about) Its not team speak, their posts don't block your posts.

This forum works just like the rest of the internet, skip the shit and read the rest! If you do want to discuss something without interruption, use the PM (which has multiple recipient options) or make a group.

Is there some way of limiting the thread rating tool, James?

Nearly every thread in PC gaming is starred. I think that is slightly extreme. Limit it to something like 3 ratings a month per person maybe?

Maybe I'm being pedantic. Who knows. I don't think every thread needs 5 stars. And yes, I have rated threads as well. The last was the Drifting competition because I think it's a good idea.

I agree. As annoying as off topic posts may be, I don't think anyone can claim that they've never gone off topic. The way I see it, if it really bothers you, you can either derail the thread further by complaining about it, or you can bring it back on topic. Guess which one will work better.

I don't think anyone did claim that..

The trouble is that is decreases the signal to noise ratio very quickly. The second its hard to follow the thread, people will be less inclinded to a) read it, b) follow it. On the today's posts page right now there is a duplicate thread that popped up, maybe because they didn't search properly, but since searching efficiency goes down as noise increases, it will lead to an inevitable downwards spiral..

Or people who don't want to contribute to the active topic can just make a separate topic for it? Nobody wants to sift through pages of off topic posts to get to the on-topic posts. There's a whole forum with unlimited space to start threads in. Start another thread if you can't stick to the topic.

There's no need to clutter up threads. We should have to take our discussions to private messaging just because some people can't stay on topic in a thread.

Looks like the suggestion forum is also going offtopic how ironic :D

I also think topics should stay on topic and if they want to chat they can use private messages instead of making a thread offtopic.

That is fine for normal threads, but it would make the threads for pictures or videos a bit cumbersome.
(I have to thank you for giving me an opportunity to use the word "cumbersome" in a reply, however :D)

If the only thing somebody is going to post are a few letters then rather not post anything. Take the time to put a decent post on, if it is a picture then say why you like it or whatever.

And on the compo rules front, aren't we running a danger of potentially having the same person winning for months on end? Should there not be a rule that if you win, you're out of the next 3, say?

That's a good point and I'll put some thought into it - maybe take the suggestion to the suggestion thread where everyone else can chime in?

I can agree with some sort of time out period. Just to cover the inevitable lighting striking in the same place twice.

I got an email just now of a friend request that I received a day or two ago...

I got two emails also with a friend request from more than 2 days back and thought it was weird something up with the notifying system even thread tracking is so behind.

That sounds fair, though I think the amount of time you have to sit one out should be relative the value of the prize you won. For example if I won something crappy, like say for example Need for Speed: The Run, it wouldn't feel very nice to be excluded from a competition to win an xbox.

It is possible, but it's not a huge chance since there is still a lucky draw at then end, giving everybody that qualified an equal 1/25 chance. That said, I do agree with your suggestion. Winners are disqualified for the next x competitions/days.

Don't call the prizes "crap", Eugene :D
You do make a valid point, however. This could be very complex to manage, though.
Maybe a tiered system where the RRP of a prize is taken into consideration?
Something like:
Prizes < R500 = Sit out 1 competition.
Prizes R501 - R1000 = Sit out 2 competitions.
Prizes R1001 - R2000 = Sit out 3 competitions.
Prizes > R2000 = Open for all.

I've got a suggestion.

Since the forum is full people spamming useless bs, I suggest more monitoring. From what I know it's a very small crew running the website, and James has responsobilities on MyBB as well, how about choosing forum mods ( those who don't mind volunteering ) from our community? We can have a poll, and the community can then vote on who will become a forum mod. The admin can then give the chosen one mod priviledges.

I thought we had a few mods already on mygaming doing their jobs
