Name the Last Original Game You Played

Portal was the last original game I played(though it is a fps in a way.)

edit actually I don't think anything is a 100% original

Portal wasn't original, Narbacular Drop was developed by a couple of guys as a university project. Valve then picked hired them and they then went on to develop Portal. Similarly Prey Had portals, sure you couldn't select where to post them but still.

You aren't going to get an entire game that is completely original, there is just no point in always reinventing the wheel. Like other forms of technological progress it's often about building upon what is already there. So wouldn't the better question to ask about what game last introduced a new concept or drastically improved upon the old.

Mass Effect: Interactive dialogue sequences. Characters respond to each line being said instead of just standing stiffly and delivering their lines like they are taking your order at a drive through.

And you get some rep.

I've been getting more and more annoyed at people moaning about the lack of originals in gaming, I wanted to point out that there is no such thing. The art of war quote was the hint, while its impossible to still have originality 30 years into gaming. 10 - 15 years ago there where alot less games around so its easier to miss the un-originality.

How about Plants vs Zombies?

If not then Leisure Larry in the land of the lounge lizards or perhaps Everquest (what can I say? I'm an old toppie! :p )

Plants vs Zombies is just another Tower Defence game, its not the first.

You could say that those old point and click adventures can be the descendants of classic text adventures like Zork.

Two big notables for me would be Half-Life and Deus Ex.

Half-Life for it's introduction of narrative into FPS games and including characters which weren't just there to be blown up. For the first time a game's story wasn't just the bits you read in the manual or on the loading screens but something you were actually a part of. :)

Deus Ex for bringing hub based, narrative driven gameplay into the FPS genre where you were also free to determine your own path through the game. Not the first game to ever have a decision/consequence morality system but it sure did it properly.

Good Examples. Though the original System Shock did some of that also.

Your Question Reads:"Name the Last Original Game You Played", not which games existed prior to the one you played
