Astronaut: Moon, Mars, and Beyond, an interesting collaboration between "serious" games developer Virtual Heroes (known for America's Army) and NASA. Think America's Army, but, from what I gather, intended to entice you into space as opposed to the local recruiter's office. It sounds fascinating. Characters will develop over time, MMO-style, and they'll engage in a number of activities that sound positively prosaic.

"...the gameplay is actually about being in a habitat on a planetary surface and doing things like mining Helium-3 for fuel, operating a hydroponics facility to grow plants and create oxygen and operating robots and vehicles," Jerry Heneghan, Virtual Heroes founder and CEO said to Big Downloads. The game will take place around 2035. I guess we'll have to wait at least a couple more decades after colonizing our solar system before we get all operatic in space.

The game is being developed using Unreal Engine 3, and not merely for the sake of expediency. According to Big Download's story, Astronaut will be all about user-created content -- players will use robots to perform missions, plus build vehicles and habitats adaptable to extraterrestrial conditions. It seems that the MMO framework will run parallel to all this. As players advance through their careers, they'll gain accreditation to use higher-tech toys, like exoskeleton suits.

A demo of Astronaut will launch sometime this fall, with its first "episode" following next year.

Yes ... you are going to study the nothingness outside there on Mars to death, level for every hour you wasted in the game.

You will gain powers such as "Star into the Sun" which gives you a chance of blinding, "The Moonwalk" will give you +speed on all your movement.

Of course, this is not all! You will also get to meet other like minded freaks and discuss the possibilities of outer worldly entities watching you from afar, plus you will get to brag at how many hours your SETI home has been running and how much of the "alien waves" you have deciphered!

Yes, you can do all this for only $10 a month! Be the first to join! Remember, we CAN boldly go where no one has gone before!

Knowing the Americans, this will take off just like America's Army did.

Just hope the community won't be as bigoted and biased though... :(
