Need advice on upgrading

There are guys around here that know exponentially more about hardware than myself, but I'm pretty sure upgrading your graphics card will give you most bang for buck.
AFAICG (as far as I could google) that motherboard has a 2nd Gen PCIe slot (the newest boards have a gen 3 slot, but the cards are backwards compatible), so you'd be fine with the newest cards.
Which card is more debatable, but maybe an AMD R9 270 or R9 270x which leaves you a few bucks for another 4gb of memory.

Damnit, that doesn't make it easy. If you want to stick to that chassis, you'll need a single-slot GPU. If you move to a new chassis, PSU and GPU that would be better.

Might be juuuust slim enough to fit.
But there's really not a lot of room to work with. I wager the fan would be hitting something or there won't be enough airflow to the bottom of the chassis.
