Need advice with my cellphone upgrade

Pretty soon I will be able to upgrade my current cellphone contract. Usually this was done at Game where I could get lots of vouchers for a cheap phone. However, since a Sony Ericson is such a pansy phone that it can't handle you driving over it with the car just once, I need to get something nice for a change.

My requirements are not that heavy on the gadgets, I would like a phone that can call and received SMSs, playing MP3s is about the top end of my technological evolution.
But, and this is the problem, I would like to have a phone that can view e-books, probably in .pdf format full screen. Meaning I don't want to scroll from side to side to read a line on the page. But I don't want to wear a handbag to carry my phone around either, so tablets are pretty much out.

I am not very clued up about phones, so maybe you can give me some models to consider. I am sure the driving-over-the-phone-episode was an once-off incident, so strength is not a essential requirement, just a phone with a larger screen able to view an entire line of a page without me having to strain my eyes to read it.

Hey Raf I say go for the iPhone on a vodacom Talk 130 with 250megs of data pm 100 sms's and ja stuff like that!! I'm getting mine tomorrow and I'm paying R400pm

I saw a HTC Desire S and an HTC Tablet (forget which one) bundled together at MTN, it was on the front page of their inshore ad book. It was in the R400 per month range

most of the 4inch phones should do the trick if you read the pdf's in landscape i suppose..

i'd recommend Iphone or Samsung galaxy S2 or htc desire hd or something along those lines

I am leaning towards the iPhone, although the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo is also waving to get my attention.

sycogrim, where are you getting the deal from, Vodacom itself, or where?

I am currently paying about R300 - R350 a month for my phone usage, so if I can get a contract that covers that with free minutes and SMS, I'll be happy. I am looking at www.cellularupgrades.co.za for some deals, I can get a Neo on a Talk 120, I assume its 120 anytime minutes.

Yeh I'm getting mine through vodacom, I was meant to pay R450 on a Talk 120 but instead they said I'll be put on a Talk 130 and I'll pay R400 with 250megs of data a month :)

Stay away from the neo, I had the xperia x10 and it's processor is rubbish!

Rather get an iphone 4 or galaxy s2.

Just my 2c

Get an iPhone with MTN, R400.

R200 Airtime, 300MB data. OOB are much better than Vodacom as well.

Speaking of the voucher thing though. I did some sums last time I upgraded and they put your payments up by the amount that will cover the voucher over the term of your contract. Basically it's a loan. The sneaky thing is that if you don't upgrade as soon as you''re due, they keep charging that same amount, so they rip you off. Nice to get a voucher, but you do pay for it, and if you're not careful, you can pay loads more for it than you should.

hmmmm i would opt for a virginmobile contract if htc/samsung is an option... R320 a month for R300 airtime, 1000 free smses ... cool thing is that what ever airtime you dont use gets carried over to the next month, however you pay for the airtime you use over the R300 ... 60c per mb for data ... they have per second billing ... they piggy back off cellc network so i dont think coverage is a problem ...

Most people won't agree with me but why not get a Windows Phone 7 phone? Something like the HTC Mozart? Or one a bit bigger?

The marketplace will be available in South Africa after the Mango update and that will happen in the next month or two. Once you tried a WP7 phone, other phones seem sluggish and outdated.

I can attest to the Galaxy SII being awesome.
Haven't read any books on it, but i read a fair amount of news/sports articles and my browsing experience is superb.
Plus it's light and thin.
Perhaps getting a tablet will be the best thing for reading books if you'll be spending alot of time doing that, but if you just want a phone, then the Galaxy SII should be on top of your list.

EDIT: CellC has it for R280 per month with 100 anytime minutes and free insurance.

PDF support is very important. Hate it that Blackberry's dont have native support.

As for getting a Win 7 phone, I have a friend at work who lives by it!
