Need some help setting up dual monitors

Hey there!

OK, so I need some help setting up dual monitors. I need it for consulting various docs etc while doing other things, and I can't print everything out, as that would be far too expensive. Now, I am using my Compaq nx7300 laptop as a main computer and I have a spare screen from an old PC. The screen is a Philips 107e6, and it has a VGA cable, and the lappy has a VGA port. The Philips is 1024x768 resolution.

Now, I gave power to the Philips, and plugged the VGA cable into the port on my lappy. The screen came to life, but, the colours were all wrong, I was getting like greens and red where I should have gotten blues, and the resolution was all wrong.

I wanna know if I'm doing everything correctly, or I am missing drivers, or what is happening here. All of the places I've looked for tutorials assume my 2nd screen is working correctly, but it isn't. So any help would be appreciated.

Here are the specs:

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard

Processor:Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz (2 CPUs)

Memory:1016MB RAM

Hard Drive:80 GB

Video Card:Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family

Monitor:Plug and Play Monitor

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435)

Ok, let's start with the basics
Right click on the desktop and go to your properties tab
In the settings tab, look if both monitors are picked up

Try setting your desktop resolution and color depth lower on the target monitor
I think this might be a case of the old monitor not being able to display the duplicated desktop settings on the laptop monitor

Ok, for some reason it just worked now after I didn't do any major setting changes. The colour displays perfectly. Now I need to know how I can basically get a second desktop on that screen, and not just a clone.

In your porperties / Settings tab you should see the option to extend your dekstop to the second monitor

Ok, so Now I have done that, clicked extend desktop to that monitor, and I am just sitting with a wallpaper. The screen is responsive, when I clicked "identify" a 2 showed up on it, so how do I get the taskbar, and various program shortcuts etc onto there?

You can switch the primary monitor to that one, but otherwise your taksbar wil remain on the primary monitor
Click and drag items you need on tha tmonitor over to it
Simple as that

Oh, now I see! It works! I have to drag to the right which is annoying. Do you know if I can drag to the left? Or make it drag to the right to get it onto my other monitor?

Either swap them aroudn or move the monitors
It will automatically assign to the right of the primary screen
