Need to register SMB website domain name

If I'm not mistaken, WA has a data center in JHB now as well. I've never had any issues with them, and I've found their customer support to be very good.

Speaking of Hetzner and Verizon, Hetzner's data center in JHB is actually in the same building as Verizon, they both run on MTN's network if I'm not mistaken. I've been in that data center a bunch of times.

Web Africa has their own backbone, and they used to run all their traffic on that, but I think they have now moved all their ADSL clients over onto the IS network, so their network is just for hosting clients now.

Disclaimer: This information is all off the top of my head, so I may be proven wrong on a point or two, or if things have changed, but I think it's all correct.
Yeah, I don't really know too much about how everything works, but I remember news reports stating that the reasons why we had breaks in communication between Cape Town and the rest of South Africa was due to issues on the Verizon network.

As for WebAfrica, my service was ok with them. Can't really complain. I just noted that if someone mentions something about WebAfrica in the Hosting forum on MyBB, the responses flood in with unhappy customers. The reason we left them is because their service offering was inadequate at the time. It got better when they launched the Nitro Dedicated Server hosting, but as far as I can tell, when it comes to dedicated servers (which is what we are interested in at least), I'm yet to find a company to offer the same value-for-money offering as Hetzner TruServ.

For websites though, if someone is looking for Windows hosting, I don't think Hetzner is an option.

what we're looking at here is shared hosting, not dedicated servers. We actually have a few dedicated Windows servers with Hetzner and they are cool but they are a very Linux oriented company so they aren't great at support with Windows machines. Good hosting company though. Either way, if you're not happy, you can always jump ship later

True. I was simply stating my experience with them as a company and the reason why we left was related to product and not service.

Guys what can you tell me about Afrihost?Cause my friend also has a business and wants to use them.I haven't heard anything bad about them, have you?

I have a friend who has an ADSL line with them and he's quite happy. Don't know anyone who's hosting with them though.

My honest opinion...

If you want hosting, go to someone who does hosting.... Not someone who does ADSL and have a few hosting servers...

Actually, with regards to Afrihost, I think they have a pretty big hosting environment for websites, dedicated and cloud servers. Plus they have Windows hosting should it be a requirement.

I don't have any experience with them with regards to any kind of hosting though. If I'm not mistaken, they do have a 30 or 60 day money back guarantee (just confirm on their website), so if you order it, set everything up, tested and you're not happy for some reason, just cancel and they'll refund you... No questions asked.

Very well, you win. :)
Insider information trumps whatever I know. :)

Hehe :)

I have worked with them before, and I would rather work with anyone else than Afrihost in particular.

They seem good, have good and cheap offerings, but then you find out things like...
- The DNS tool in CPanel does not plug into their DNS, it is just "there"
- The domain setup tool does not work (in fact, half of CPanel is just there but not working)
- They will not disclose their server configuration settings (simple things like client php settings) if you move away from them
etc

Seems like someone at AfriHost said "let's do hosting", then they started and got to 95% and said "close enough". :D

We host a dedicated server with Afrihost and so far so good. The last time I checked Afrihost is the third biggest hosting company in South Africa, with Hetzner being first and WebAfrica second.

I host some small sites at http://www.gridhost.co.za/ and I've only ever had great support from them. I will be moving away from them because I need ASP.net so I require Windows hosting but Gridhost is cheap and I can really recommend them.

*edit*
Eish but looking at HelloPeter they also have quite a few complaints. So it's a tough one.
