Netflix officially in SA!

Yeah we shared it last night in TK, but no other forum posts for it. I signed up and had a look at the catalogue. Nothing really special for me, and honestly it's lineup of shows and movies are much worse than Showmax. Hopefully they can add a lot more, but this is not the homecoming of a new king in my books.

Speaking of lineup, does the local version of Netflix have Jessica Jones or any other superhero series other than Arrow? [I get my fix via SABC3]

Anyone able to confirm if Netflix SA will be usable through the XBox One app now?
If you have an SA Xbox Live account not yet, as the app is not available for download in the app store. Hopefully that will be added in the near future. When I signed up for Netflix I did stipulate I'll be watching on Xbox One.

I'm surprised you have to stipulate that, seems a bit redundant.

Well when you do, it asks you how you will be streaming Netflix. Don't know if they have some advanced tech to check how your account is accessing their services and blocking you from streaming on other platforms you haven't specified. Not sure, this is the first time I've used Netflix ever.

Thanks guys. The "how will you be streaming" question was the reason I asked. Had no joy getting it to work through the XB1 so was wondering if I had done something wrong. Looks like a little patience is required. Hopefully it'll be live by the time the free trial period ends.

What exactly was the issue? You can download the app off the US or UK store. Just change the Location under Settings on the Xbox One to say United States. Then download the Netflix app. Switch the Location back to South Africa, and you can use the app with a SA account.

It popped up on the PS4 yesterday, so I would imagine they would have enabled it on the XBone as well. Maybe changes there take a little longer or something...

What hardware setups are you folks using for Netflix?

I second this question and will also add - what's the data usage like?

I go through the xbox and PS because I don't have a Smart TV. Works very well.

And I think on a day of fairly heavy usage, I can go through about 10Gb. On the weekends, I'm usually on around 10GB per day, otherwise 2-4GB per day.

BTW, the SA library is seriously small compared to most other countries, as I'm sure everyone expected, mostly because rights to most of the content is already in the hands of other companies like Multichoice, here's an infographic from Unotelly (below). Using them or one of the other services like Unblockus means that you can get Netflix from any country, so you can access the entire Netflix library rather than any one country.

Unotelly has a very handy site, where you can search across all Netflix regions, and it'll show you what countries it's available in, then you just click one of the countries to update your UnoTelly to that region, then fire up Netflix and watch it.

http://www.moreflicks.com/ is another handy site, which will search across Netflix Vudu, Hulu, iTunes, BBC iPlayer, Fox, MGo, NowTV and Crackle.

Been using it for 2 (going on 3) years now on PS3, Samsung Smart TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick and iPad. All work beautifully, but each had their own caveats for setup (Fire TV Stick and Samsung Smart TV being the most tricky). It boiled down to getting the device and/or account used on it compatible with a valid Netflix region.

As for data usage, it averages to around 300MB / hour for 480p content. A mix of 720p / 1080p will eat around 700-900MB / hour. On a 4Mbps line you will get a fairly stable stream of HD content. I have a 10Mbps (unshaped, virtually uncapped) fibre line and stream 1080p on 2 devices at once, all while downloading Steam games and updates.

I find Youtube's compression to still be superior though. Buffering time isn't all that long (4-5 seconds on average) and I notice the odd quality dip (to prevent buffering) every now and then, whereas 1080p content on Youtube loads instantly and never buffers or stutters in any way.

Overall, I've been very happy with my Netflix experience and the wife and I really miss it when we're internetless (like right now, staying at a hotel while they fix our caved-in roof).

Oh ya, it also works well on Android tablets and phones, I've set it up on a Chromecast stick for friends, and on Roku at my folks. The Roku had some extra hoops to jump through because it also had to be set up as US, and it the Netflix app does a reverse dns lookup so you have to block some dns servers from your router, hopefully that won't be necessary anymore now though

Would you guys say the network usage of steaming Netflix is on par with equivalent quality of YouTube?

Ie. Will you be able to game online while streaming?

I can game fine while the wife watches Netflix. I'm syncing at 8Mbps but it was ok even on a 4Mbps line

Ya my lighty watches loads of shows. He has his own profile, which is set to little kids mode. Also, the first month is free, so you can always try it out and cancel if it's not working for you.

Kids shows also vary per region so I do switch region with UnoTelly for him too.
