New ADSL router and Internet Account

Hey guys,

So I'm moving into my own flat from next month and was hoping you could all help me to decide on an internet account and router. I will mostly be using it for gaming, browsing and downloading the odd episode of something so my data requirements are not massive.

So far my thoughts are:
Webafrica account + Line rental = 1mb/s Uncapped for R480
D-Link Wifi N ADSL +2/+2 router

I have one of those takealot vouchers left that I'd like to use

Would appreciate any advice.

P.S. I was also considering this router but it does not appear to have any ethernet or USB ports????

Avoid axxess, my brother and I have had some bad experiences with axxess. I would never recommend them to anyone xD
I'm no expert in this field, If you do plan on mainly gaming on the line, I would suggest getting a capped solution, as almost all uncapped solutions have some sort of shaping, which is crap.

Just be careful, if you are referring to the capped 25 gig account plus 1mb line rental than only the first 3 months are R489 thereafter its R550 per month. Also look for a unshaped account if you are really into your online gaming, lower pings FTW

think best bang for buck is the mweb uncapped and you get a router with that ?

IF i were you id get my line from Telkom. you get a free router then, You go and get a different ISP from some 1 else

Router should be fine, it does have WiFi N so you are set for current wireless devices.

I've got the 4mb WebAfrica uncapped line and no issue at all so far. Just read up on their Acceptable Usage Policy before deciding. If you don't envisage yourself downloading more than 20(odd)gb during the week then you are fine. If you do plan on being a data muncher, you can either set your downloads to run between 12:00 and 6:00 am or maybe look at some of the other ISPs.

Thanks Nimatek. Thats exactly what I was thinking as well. I am weary/wary (Both) of Telkom and the "free" routers they bundle are sh1t. There supposed Free 3 months uncapped becomes about R150 more expensive than most of the similar accounts on other ISPs once you start paying in the 4th month. After 9 months you are officially losing money. Telkom = Devil

I've had good experience with MWeb uncapped even when gaming. The router I would buy separate though and check out some reviews. Maybe start with D-link, they are normally good.

I see I am the only one so far that is not going to suggest Mweb uncapped, but Im also not going to suggest anything else. I have a 4Mb account since start November, and all I can say its crap for gaming! Its fine for local games (most of the time), Battlefield 3, CSS, etc. Its absolutely useless for anything international, except probably MMOs (Guild Wars ~500+ms). I am also (TRYING) to play Heroes of Newerth international EU servers, with a minimum ping of 320ms ingame, and very very jittery... not fun at all. Also, alot of times browsing is so slow, doing speedtest.net brings up 0.26Mbps, yeah epic fast!

Downloading on the account is not too bad, but thats because you can schedule it to run overnight. Generally I have yet to see anything over 300Kb/s on this account since the start...

So, basically if you are going for local-only gaming then it should be fine, but as I see your GW2 sig thats going to be a problem next year :p . In short, I cancelled my Mweb account because of bad gaming experience, and have yet to find something to join in January.

There is nothing atm in the uncapped area that is good. Even my planned move to Webafrica's new uncapped is halted 100%, (saw this and because I am so unhappy with 1 month of CRAP Mweb, it was an easy decision...at first.) because they seem to be just as bad :( Read the last 5+ pages and see for yourself. Clearly they just falsely said they have made enough provision, and most of the stuff that they said would not happen, is happening. Throttling when reaching 6 hours cap is worse than the said 50% they said you would lose; gaming is bad.

I am still looking for my account for next year, and I dont know where now tbh.

if you havent done anything yet .. Go to telkom get the 1mb uncapped option. for free 3 months.

you can save some cash whilst doing this. And also see how the line holds up :D Free installation and router.

You could probably go for the telkom 3 months free option and then just cancel and get mweb after the 3 months.

you cant go wrong with Dlink routers... also, MWEB 1MB uncapped is TRUE uncapped for R588 (including ADSL line)

The 3month Telkom free thing scares me. I don't believe that telkom gives anything away for free. I can just imagine trying to cancel this thing at 3months...and it taking like another 3months to organise. Has anyone actually taken it yet?

The feel I'm gettin from a lot of the comments is that I should perhaps settle for a capped account!?

Have a look at Openweb as your ISP and Axxess if you want the line and ISP at the same place. Both have good deals.

Not to troll, but Cobalt's avatar looks an item I got in Skyrim and have no idea what to do with :p
Back on track...I got the telkom 3 months trial in October (that time it was with a 5gb International cap and 20gb Local cap on a 384kb line). The installation and service was outstanding (had some problems setting up and a telkom van was at my home at 09:00am the following morning to sort it out). Mid October I cancelled the trial and switched to 384kb uncapped.

Ping was fine playing HON (70 local and 200 - 300 International). Switched over to Webafrica in November on a 1mb line (via Telkom) and couldn't be happier. I got hold of a Redafrica account for R199 (30gb anytime and 100gb after hours) and cancelled my internet package and upgraded the line.

I'm not shaped whatsoever on Webafrica (105kb/s download speed 24/7) and 130gb is really more than enough for me personally since I mostly game and download videos now and then.
