New car advice

Fiat Punto? its a good looking lil car and also has quite a bit of features for its price.
 
Best advice I got was to make sure spare parts were easy to get a hold of and therefore not expensive and that it is a known reliable car.
Out of the 3 it seems like the Fiesta is the best bet.

Kia's services are quite cheap as well. they used to be quite expensive, but with their popularity its come down a lot. my boss recently had to replace both side mirrors on his Sorento and it only cost him R800 at the dealer...
 
I have a Ford Fiesta 1.6 Titanium (2009) and I can definitely recommend it, super comfortable, great ride, decent power.

My Bro has a 1.6 Polo and it's also pretty pimp, slightly harder suspension and tighter steering makes it a bit less comfortable ride but it's more responsive and sporty.

The Fiesta is starting to look like a decent option to me, quite slick and decent specs for the price. Looks sweet in white!
 
My cousin has one in white and it's probably one of the few cars I actually like in white. :) Sea Grey is also quite nice.
 
Go test drive them all and then make your decision.
Remember, the first time you sit down in the car, if you can't give it a name...its not for you! :p

I've seen the Citroen DS3 and I was quite impressed with it. Nice little car.

The Mini Cooper has won the "Gay car of the year award" a few years back... which has kinda linked a stereotype to the car... haven't seen too many men driving that car since then

Although I'm not really a Ford fan, the recent shaped Fiesta looks quite sporty. If it is looks that you're after, this or the Citroen DS3 would be one of the better choices. (Note I haven't seen all the cars recommended in this thread thus far)

Mazda always has something on special and their specials are quite big (e.g. R30k off) which can bring a Mazda 3 down to below R200k which makes it good value for money, although the Mazda 3 is a bit of a larger car than what you're looking for.

I'm a VW driver / fan myself, but unless you're looking at something in the Golf class or perhaps the 1.6TDI Polo, I would rather go for one of the other recommendations. The 1.6 TDI, although only 77kW, will give you great fuel consumption and lots of torque. The 1.6 petrol models basically gives you a reliable car / engine, but that's about it. Almost all other models in its class have better specs / features.

I had to laugh at the Mini comment, which is another reason that I'm not particularly fond of it; a pity it's such fun to drive.

My alternativesare definitely the DS3 and the Mito, both of which are a good blend of oomph and price IMHO. Finding a decent secondhand one is difficult though, but I'm taking that as a sign that both are so awesome that no one wants to sell :D

I wish VW still made the 1.9 TDI Sportline: apart from the turbo issues those were kickass (and easily chipped) cars.

I used to recommend people away from the 1.9TDI due to those turbo issues, but since the VW recall on the Polo TDIs, those turbo issues have apparently been sorted out. I didn't realise that they're not making the 1.9TDI anymore.
 
Well having spent my deposit on stock for my business the new car dream went out the window, so badly wanted a focus st :( but anyway I went and drove quite a few cars before deciding on the focus, and I know its way out of the specified price bracket but I did test a number of cars ranging from R150 000 upto R400 000.

Out of the small zippy cars, I loved the Ford Fiesta, one I tested was the S whatever that means, but it felt fantastic and the build quality was solid, also not a bad little engine. I am also quite a big guy, 1.99m Tall and well over the 100Kg mark and space wise the ford was also pretty good :P

Probably gonna get laughed at for this but I also felt the new Mitsubishi Lancer was a solid car, nice toys, decent performance and in black with black mags it was quite a looker. Also if I am not mistaken the 2L delivers 110kw which is pretty good.

Avoid the mini..its a stupid hateful little box...I can't stand those cars lol xD

If you want power and you're not bothered about fuel consumption then get yourself a Pre Owned Subaru WRX, even the normal version of the car shifts and they just don't go wrong, mate of mine has had his for 5 years now and he is yet to mention it breaking down or costing a fortune to repair, that said the older models of the cars do suffer from old style interiors. Performance wise for the money there is nothing that'll run like a scooby that's been well looked after and in good nick.

Man I wanted that focus st :( Next year...its mine :D
 
After many, many test drives and excessive procrastination, this is what's arriving in my driveway this afternoon:

It's an Alfa Mito QV: 125kw of juice, impressive features (hill hold, Start&Stop, dual auto aircon, Blue&Me, Alcantara leather interior) and a 6 year service plan as standard.

Stoked :D
