New car time

Hi Guys

I need some advice. my car is packing up so I need to get a new one.
Budget is around 100k, at the moment I am looking at a 2009 Ford Fiesta 1.4 Ambiente for 107k.
Main needs is resale value and fuel economy.
I like the look of the Fiesta over the Polo Playa's and from what I know the fuel economy is better with the Fiesta.

I am in Cape Town (Southern Peninsula) and live close to the ocean, car will be parked outside with a car cover thing put over it.
I am not buying through a private sale due to if something goes wrong etc.
No deposit and the car will be paid off so Auction is not an option.
What can you guys recommend.

Within your budget, I think you will have to dig very deep in the deal pile to find a better car at that price. I would also go with the Ford above the Polo as the maintenance costs are much lower for the Ford than the VW. Some of the other options you have in this price class is the Fiat Punto 1.4, Peugeot 207 1.6, Kia Picanto 1.4, VW Polo Trendline 1.4 and maybe even a Toyota Yaris. Of those cars, my choice would still go with the Ford.

I have been advised not to go with any French cars, current car is a Fiat which wasn't impressive so that rules those 2 out.
The picanto 1.4's aren't as good resale value as they are the older one's? New Picanto's are small engines with no power.
Toyota are high to maintain.

I will agree 100% with the comment of not going with French cars. Way too high maintenance and way too many problems. So with all said and done, I think you are left with the Ford or VW. And the Ford wins IMO.

cars with the highest resale value are vw's, fiesta's, i10's etc depreciate super quick.

There is a 2009 VW Polo Playa 1.6 with 112k km for R90k at another car sales place.

Hey, I have an old 2004 Polo Classic and live on the South Coast KZN. High area for salt, humidity, etc.
Not a spot of rust on it. That's on thing I can really give credit to the Polos, and they are solid cars.

Those are nice, just dont get a vivo (its technically the same car made alot cheaper) and it has a lot less standard features than the pre vivo polo's

and always ask for an AA check to see that the car is accident free, ive seen a few cars at dealers (who claim they're not allowed to sell coded vehicles) with cars that has been in accidents and shoddily repaired

Agreed, when getting a Polo get the proper one and not the Vivo. Fun fact is that the Vivo uses an older specification engine than the Polo. Same applies with the Figo vs the Fiesta (essentially the same car, just some minor tweaks).

What about a second hand Kia Rio (the older shape)?

also keep in mind the insurance you will be paying for your car. insurance for VW polo's in my experience is a lot more than other car makes. so keep the price for the car your aiming at in mind includign what insurance will cost. perhaps get a few quotes just as a ballpark as well

Have you considered a small Honda like the Jazz? I know it's not the prettiest of cars, but they are very reliable and nice to drive, albeit not the fastest thing you've driven. Repair costs aren't that high either.

A quick look shows me that you can get a 2009 Honda Jazz 1.5 with 103k on it for R110k.

Uhm, I happen to know that the Honda is pretty expensive parts wise. R500 per spark plug, R900 for a cambelt, rear brakes will cost you a staggering R2500. The only manufacturer in that class that is more expensive to repair and maintain is an Opel and Toyota.

Nothing wrong with a Polo Vivo bud, owned 2 now and both are a pleasure to drive and own for the price. The vivo replaced the old Golf 1 shape citirox billabong branded ones etc i believe.

Just a personal choice for me really.

That was what I was going to say, or ask if its true. I know when I was shopping around a few years back, the insurance for a golf was way more than for my current car. Also, they want me to fit satelite tracking, gear lock and alarm.

Is it true that Golfs and Polo's get stolen more often?

Sorry, hope I'm not derailing, but if true, might help him make a better choice.
