New consoles making AMD big money

Well, I have always been an AMD fanboy when its comes to GPU's!

Good for them

AMD’s chips power all of the new consoles. Sony’s PlayStation 4, Microsoft’s Xbox One and even Nintendo’s Wii U use processors supplied by AMD. Rival chipmaker Nvidia’s said on numerous occasions that it’s glad it’s not supplying the chips for the consoles. It’s always seemed like sour grapes. they could get sourer, as AMD’s revealed that the new consoles have given their bottom line a boost.

In March last year, Tony Tamasi of Nvidia said. ".. we came to the conclusion that we didn’t want to do the business at the price those guys were willing to pay".

"Having been through the original Xbox and PS3, we understand the economics of [console development] and the tradeoffs,"

The tradeoff seems to be cash. The arm of AMD responsible for the console chips, AMD’s Graphical and Visual Solutions division, saw revenue a year-on-year increase of $539 million for the last quarter of 2013 – up to $865 million from the previous year’s $326 million.

"Strong execution of our strategic transformation plan drove significant revenue growth and improved profitability in the fourth quarter," said AMD president and CEO Rory Read in a statement.

"The continued ramp of our semi-custom SoCs and leadership graphics products resulted in a 38 percent revenue increase from the year ago quarter. Our focus in 2014 is to deliver revenue growth and profitability for the full year by leveraging our differentiated IP to drive success in our targeted new markets and core businesses."

It’s not all roses, champagne and yachts for AMD though, as AMD’s Computer Solutions division – the one responsible for its PC chips - saw a nasty $7 million operating loss in Q4 on revenue of $722 million. In the last year, that division saw a $22 million loss in the last year.

While AMD keeps console gamers playing, Nvidia’s hedging its bets on mobile chips and its prominence in Steam Machines.

Well i have always been an amd fanboy and with my upgrade sue soon i might fall back to amd for my cpu/mobo combo what i am on now is my first intel in prolly 17 years and it impressed me but i'm thinking about mantle :D

Ya the days of AMD competing with Intel in the CPU Market are gone... Especially with what i do, 3D rendering, the AMD Chip sets fail dismally compared to the intel...

I find it surprising that Nvidia werent prepared to compensate on their price for the GPU considering the sheer volume... But i suppose Nvidia are dominating the PC industry, so they not interested...

Yeah they are dominating at the moment, so aggressive low pricing like AMD/ATI does not bother them because there's a whole bunch of loyal fanboys that will pay much more.

Ja the bulldozer architecture has been a disaster for AMD but they had to ride it out. 2015 brings hope with a new architecture.

Well glad to see there are a few amd fanboys among us and i think have a look at some of the newer amd rendering cards Tom you mught be surprised

Say what? I bleed green and red! :D Though that could also have something to with being half Italian. :p Anyway I'm really happy to see AMD turning a profit for a change. Can't wait till I can afford my FX and R9 upgrades. :)

Glad to see they're coming out on top for a change. I've always preferred AMD :p

Said no one ever. I love intel although they are alot more expensive on cpu's you get good quility and if you say i3, i5, or i7 everyone knows what you are talking about

Another area where AMD probably made a pretty penny with their GPUs is Bitcoin mining. For some reason, Nvidia GPUs are useless for mining but AMD's worked a charm. That was in the days when it was still profitable to mine bitcoins with GPUs, however.

i'm a Firm believer in amd in all my years of gaming i have only once used an nvidia card all my others have been ati/amd

Iv been the opposite, only had one ATI card, which funnily enough died on me... A mate told me to put it in the oven on 230 degrees, which i did, and nothing happened...

Since then iv been Nvidia all the way...

In my case, I have a dead 6800GTS 320mb here. Did not last long, still have working ATI cards here which is much older. I guess it's not something wrong with the brand itself, but sometimes you are just unlucky with some of the cards' lifespan

I like to think AMD is the one who has made the best innovations in the PC space. If you didn't know they were the first to release a 1Ghz CPU, their implementation of the 64-bit instruction set was backwards compatible with 32-bit whereas Intel's wasn't and thus we have AMD to thank for being able to run 32-bit apps with a 64-bit processor. And now we have AMD pushing the boundaries again with APUs.

I also hope that with AMD powering all three next-gen consoles it will carry over to the PC side and thus games will run better on AMD hardware as a result.

Oh, don't be so sure. I won't be surprised if something did happen: You're friend busting a gut laughing at you, maybe? :D

I've only ever had one card die on me and that was an Nvidia, but I'm no AMD fanboy. I'll buy whatever gives me the best bang for buck at the time of purchase.

I'm a fence sitter when it comes to CPU's and GPU's. I buy whichever gives the best bang for buck. CPU wise I currently have Intel, and GPU wise NVidia, though I am looking at getting one of the R9 series card sometime. It's for the best though that one company does not dominate all the markets. Can you imagine the APU's coming out in a few years time if you take into consideration the progress CPU's/GPU's have made in the last few years?

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I kinda understand fanboyism, but I think you just undermine your own buying power through it. When you fall on hard times, will the company you supported through hard times support you? Of course not. So buy whatever gives you the best balance between price and performance.
