Early Monday morning, Zeebo CEO John Rizzo and Qualcomm games and services senior director Mike Yuen today announced the launch of the Zeebo console, intended for emerging markets worldwide, specifically BRIC – Brazil, Russia, India, and China, which represents 800 million people. “In 2000 Bill Gates introduced the original Microsoft Xbox at GDC,” said Mike Yuen. “We’re honored here to release what we believe will be the fourth big console.” Zeebo is based on Qualcomm mobile technology, from the graphics chipset to the 3G wireless network, and has positioned itself as a piracy-free alternative to the larger, more expensive consoles. In Brazil, for instance, where the console is launching first, a PS3 costs the equivalent of US$1,100 new, and the Wii costs US$1,000, because neither console has officially launched there — the only alternative for those consoles is piracy.

The Zeebo is launching at the equivalent of $199 USD, with games costing in the range of $5 to $15. Games are download-only across a 3G wireless network, which can also be used as a connectivity point for laptops in those homes without internet. Yuen compared the video game market to the Matterhorn, in that many have died trying to climb it. “Lots of companies have tried to conquer the big three, and died doing it. So, within Qualcomm we’ve been thinking about how we can do this differently, and with cellular technology.”

Qualcomm and Zeebo did a number of market tests and research in various regions, and found that most middle class families had not been exposed to much marketing about games, but had used cell phones to download ringtones or simple games.

here we go.... its just like i told u guys theres gonna be a console thats gonna put PS, Xbox and Wii to the test :p

This is a welcomed addition to the console 'collection'. It's also pretty good looking and will no doubt attract quite a few interested parties. Let's hope it joins us here in SA, but considering that it's digital distribution only, the chances seem rather poor.

Good news that :D

I'm quite happy about this but I think there are some things that they should probably come to terms with:

1) Someone is going to find a way to pirate the games.
2) They're probably not going to take out the big boys.

It's still fantastic news and I hope we get to play with it :D Would be pretty cool.

I wonder how this machine will play, I doubt that Microsoft and sony will even notice this new console..lol!!
It mite just take out the wii..lol!!

I wonder what its going to look like though.... can you imagine a PS3/Xbox/Wii all built into one console....

Based on the list of the games that they have (titles page) the console isn't exactly the strongest ever.

Also, bat for us on the colour schemes supported: PAL-M :D

I dunno why they boast "The entire Zeebo console weighs less than the Xbox-360 power supply".

That's often not a plus. My SNES weighed very little as well.

IT looks nice. Could be good... as a intermediate gamer.. the guys looking for flashy graphics, etc... will be dissapointed I think.. 640 x 480 resolution , PAL-M and NTSC output , with only an RCA Connector (Video Composite TV Signal, x2 Stereo Audio) ..

Shouldnt worry PS3 / Xbox 360 / Wii too much I think.

If I want flashy, high-end graphics, I boot up my gaming PC. Nothing wrong with dated visuals as long as they do not induce nausea and the gameplay is compelling.

Kudos to them for spotting a potentially massive market for low-cost gaming.
I hope for their sake that they grow their game library. Iti s looking a little sparse.
