New Graphic Card, or SSD?

Sup guys,

I'm currently running a decent rig: PhenomX4 3.2 GHz, HD 5770, and games running off a standard 300gig HD.
Now, I'm considering getting a GC upgrade to a HD 6870, but I'm curious whether a SSD would be a better option in getting a better gaming experience.

Your opinions and tips would be appreciated! :D

SSD now, then a better graphics card later...

I think the jump to the SSD will be bigger / better than the jump between those two cards.

a SSD will make no difference to you're gaming experience, unless you play flight sims.
The only thing you'll notice with a ssd are the loading times of games being cut down dramtically but that doesn't alter you're gaming experience.

Where as the 6870 is a much better card than the 5770.

Flight Sims? Interesting. I couldn't dig up much info on SSD gaming performance so far, but there is definitely better load times between levels and such, which is awesome.

I'm still playing Skyrim at the moment, and it suddenly occurred to me that the HDD must be accessed quiet a lot when you're speeding across on horse back. Wonder if someone did a bench on this..

SSD will make your PC a lot quicker and maps load MUCH faster in games.

SSD won't however add any real benefit to your gaming performance other than the load times.

I just bought a OCZ Vertex and it was money well spent. My PC flies now.

Upgrade your graphics doodad. The gain from a SSD is minimal. I bought one a couple of months back and don't notice much of a difference. Sure, the OS loading times are faster and your games do load a little quicker. But you won't be seeing an improvement in FPS or general game experience. Make sure your HDD is running as it should and preferably at 7200RPM. But I'd say forget the SSD and upgrade your graphics card.

If you're thinking an SSD will make a world of difference with the Battlefield 3 load-times, you're mistaken.

Strange.. Coz mine does? My maps load in roughly 5 seconds and I'm always usually the first or second player to load up.

@OP - Get an SSD. There's always new graphic cards coming out. In fact, the Nvidia 6xx cards are around the corner.

Odd, mine takes a good solid minute or two to load. Some of the guys I chat to also have SSD's and theirs takes equally long. Did you 1337 hax your BF3 to make the process a little quicker?

I just think that for the price, you're better off with a GPU. SSD's are expensive and only decrease your load time from what I can see, not all that handy if you're trying to increase your in-game visual experience.

Gpu will give better fps.
Also you didn't mention how much ram you have, that could be a problem.
That will be 4 gigs, which is fine by my standards.

Looks like there is a trending position here, with more people voting on the card upgrade. Kif, funny thing I was so sold on getting the SSD, but now..shoh, seems like the tables have turned.

I'd go with Graphics. I would wait for the ssd prices to drop some more if I were you. I also want to upgrade my primary drive, but I won't do it until ssds become larger and less expensive.

I cannot believe people say SSD. I mean, really. Get the GPU. That is an actual performance increase FPS wise in games.

Guys can someone please tell me, those of you who say GET SDD.
Except for windows / program load times and game loading times (which is generally only like 10-20 seconds anyway) what else makes SSD's so great?

As far as I can tell it ONLY increases loading times of windows/program/games. Not actual FPS in game or anything.

So how can getting an SSD be a priority over a GPU that will actually push your game above 60fps and will therefore give you a smooth gameplay experience compared to a laggy one.

Is it really more important to load in 3 sec instead of 10 sec than to have a smooth experience while actually gaming?

I do understand why people get SSD's, but I do not understand how anyone could possibly choose a SSD over a needed GPU upgrade....For GAMING.

In this case id say a GPU like joker suggested the 6870 is the best thing ot go for it is pretty much 2 x upgrade for his current GPU. I would then sell that GPU and buy a 64GB SSD :D So both problem sorted?

Ive got a SSd and a 580GTX

MY SSD trumps my 580 GTX for the best upgrade ive made for my pc.

I reboot my pc in less than 10 seconds. It takes longer for my bios to post than for my pc to boot.

If i get the old good BOSD i am back in game before the round ends .

Also on the HDD makes no difference to fps. ... CSB bro

It doesnt directely affect the fps no BUT

IF i install cod 4 on a normal sata 2 or 3 HDD 7200 RPM my fps bounces between 230-250 mostly on 250 but still bounces around

on my SSD it is 250 constant :D

You explain that :D

Why not just sell the 5770 and use that money to get a better gpu then a 6870?
I say gpu all the way. No game will require a solid state drive. Games will require a better gpu.

Sup folks, thanks all for the feedback.
I thought it over and did some research and decided that I'll definitely be getting BOTH for the upgrade :D
I've put down an order for a 60gig SSD so hopefully it will be arriving tomorrow. The SSD will be a good investment in the long run in terms of productivity.

On the GC front, I've decided to wait a little longer for the new HD7000s to come out and probably upgrade from there (HD7850?). My HD5770 has served me well and still does! Will be sad to let her go.

I would have done the same as the GPU upgrade is not that big and SSD can last and should make your system responsive for a few years. if you were going from the HD5770 to something like the HD7970 then i wouldve said GPU

Coheed, just do some research or let these okes help you with SSD choice. Some SSD's you get some BSOD on apparently. Like cranky pointed out with "If i get the old good BOSD i am back in game before the round ends"

I have a standard 7200RPM hdd and i boot win7 professional in 15 sec. Have not had a BSOD since I installed the windows last year sometime....

@OP - Good on you for getting both :P

Lol.

I'll make a vid for you later on with loading a level :P

Yes a GPU will give you better visuals, but who plays on anything other than low detail settings in BF3 on multiplayer anyway?

Sorry, this nerd rage does not compute.

I guess I know from experience? Having my rig as it is now, the SSD was the last upgrade I had. It made a HUGE performance boost overall. You also forget RAM caching/Virtual RAM that happens.

With an SSD and RAM caching, your whole gameplay experience WILL improve as well as opposed to having a crappy mechanical hard drive as a main OS/games drive.
