Hey All

I have a bit of a problem with my laptop. I recently bought a 320gb hard drive, to replace my 120gb hard drive. I cloned the hard drive normally (with acronis true image 2010). Everything worked out fine, however I have noticed that my pc is a little slower than it was, and every 40mins or so my pc will hang for about a minute or so. Its strange because I can switch between applications however I cant do anything in them.

I'm running windows 7 ultimate 32 bit, with 4gb ram (yes i know i'm going to upgrade to 64-bit :P).

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Did u try a format and reinstall??
Have you checked your processes running in Task Manager??
Check your event viewer and click on system you can see what might be causing issues there whether its drivers... hardware or software. :)

No I didnt format and install, thats what i wanted to avoid cos i did that less than a month ago.

I cloned the disk, so as to avoid having to re-install everything.

logically it doesnt make sense why its slower, i mean it's exactly the same as the old one...

Good point, check if you are getting application hangs, etc or if it gives you events after the pc hangs.

Well I'm not exactly sure what is hanging. Because i can switch between applications but none of them function. So technically my pc doesnt hang, it just tells me to wait while it does its business...

just check the bloody logs stop arguing... lol.... it will show you in the system logs and while ur at it check ur application logs :D

Did you buy a Seagate 7200rpm laptop HDD?

Indeed I did... i think, not sure of the rpm but i'm pretty sure that might be it.

Google basically told me to update my RAID and SATA drivers in the device manager, which i've done now, so we'll see.

If you bought the 7200rpm drive you're going to be peeved because there is a known issue with the drive where it basically "hangs" every few minutes. I hope for your part it's not the same drive. :(

Aaaah ffs that would suck balls! Well so far since updating the drivers it seems to working fine. Where did you find that out?

I recently bought a 320GB 7200rpm Seagate 2.5" HDD to replace the 40GB HDD that was in my PS3 and after purchasing it I just went online and read up on it a bit, that's when I came across these people (a few of them) complaining about the drive "hanging" every now and then causing chaos on their laptops. I have to admit that I haven't noticed anything strange on my PS3. They also complained that it was a very "loud" drive after a week or two of usage.

Ah interesting. Well so far i'm lucky havent had any problems, I upgraded the motherboard drivers for Sata Harddrives and hasnt frozen yet. But seriously, how can they release a product on the market like that if they havent fully tested it. I mean FFS its Seagate... :(

That's what I thought! In my mind I always thought Seagate was a top-notch brand! Apparently they've gone down in quality a lot lately. Oh well, such is life. I'm glad to hear that you're problem is subsiding a bit! That's very good news.

Neo, it seems that updating my nForce SATA drives did the trick. You should share this news with the guys who you said it wasnt working for ;)

I had a desktop Seagate 7200rpm drive and it had exactly the same problem, every 30mins-1 hour it would hang the PC while the drive would spin up again. It was obvious it was the drive though since you could clearly hear the drive spinning up. I sent mine back on warranty.
