New Mass Effect game in development, BioWare confirms

Hmm... I guess. I'm just thinking, how many ME games could you create around the Reapers or pre-Reapers? Not many, certainly not a trilogy. Would it not make sense to invest more time in creating three separate canons for the three different endings? But as the Synergy ending stuffs everything up, so that wouldn't be possible I see now...

So BioWare can either go one of two ways then. Re-write the Mass Effect story, only taking into account Shepherd's good choices and making him the ultimate hero. Or we get a pre-Reaper game, which would make a brilliant prequel but I see that only working for one installment.

Reapers show up ever 50 000 years, there is plenty of time in between. Plus there are plenty of other threats to deal with, the reapers dont even need to be hinted at.

To your previous post, it sure would make for a very exciting prequel! But then that would require re-writing how we discovered aliens and our reactions to the discovery. So whether we choose a single ending or a re-write the discovery of the Mass Relays, fans will still be pissed off either way. But I'm all for either!

Well, not really. Remember we weren't an advanced civilization for 50,000 years. The Reapers come to destroy civilizations that reach the peak of the decadence really, like the space version of Atlantis. So our species was left alone for how ever long we needed to evolve, but we only have around 10,000-20,000 years of recorded history. So we can't tell a story too far back as we're still running around in animal skins, but as soon as we are able to launch the first starships we learn the Reapers are on there way. In the ME Universe, all three games span about 3-4yrs I'm assuming. So there's not a lot of room for other threats to develop after our discoveries of the Mass Relays in 2157 and the Reaper invasion.

A problem with doing a prequel, especially related to humans is that A) Shepard was sort around for most of the time humans were part of the galactic community (first contact war to Reaper invasion) and B) much of that history has already been explained in codex entires and other media such as comics and books. So you would have to either reduce the scope entirely to such a point that it could be 'black ops' or you would have to retcon something big.

One thing they could do would be to have the story running parallel but to the trilogy but then that also runs into its own problems since Shepard was CLEARLY established and THE hero of the entire universe and not only that tbh I wouldn't really be interested in playing that game since I know how it ends and it's poo.

Why would they need to re-write the first contact reaction? The codex in Mass Effect touches on it but I am sure there is a lot of grey area that could be filled in. The odd retcon might sneak in but alot less than man handling a story to make it fit post ME3 setting.

Why tell a human story? Why not Asari or Turian? Why not let the player choose which of the Council Races they want to play and then tell a story like that?

Why go the prequel route, why ME route at all? Oh yes new is hard, innovation is wrong. Just make it a wiiu exclusive :)

What we need is more warhammer :D

I've said it before and I'll say it again, 3 games each with a 30 + hours of gameplay, each with alot of replay ability and people writing the entire series off because of an unpopular ending that lasted about 15 minutes, this seems really stupid too me.

Yes some of the 42% that actually finished the game didn't like the ending but that is no reason to scrap an amazing universe.

I am cautiously optimistic, the Mass Effect universe has alot of potential.

Don't get me wrong I loved the whole series its just ME3 didn't live up to my expectations

I offer up the "Return of the Jedi Hypothesis"

New Hope - Good, ground breaking even.
Empire Strikes Back - Considered by Many to be the best is the series, dark, moody etc.
Return of the Jedi - worst received of the original trilogy, ending the saga, failed to really build on Empire.

This pastern holds true for most Trilogies.
Back to the Future 1 - Good, not great.
Back to the Future 2 - Better than 1, builds well on events of 1.
Back to the Future 3 - decent but weak final chapter.

Alien 1 - Good or Great film depending on who you ask.
Aliens (or Alien 2) - Great film, takes the character of Ripley to a new level becomes the film most remember when the Alien Quadrilogy is mentioned.
Alien 3 - Boring, bad, forgettable.
Alien 4 - Lets not talk about it...

The same holds true for Games, IMHO. Halo, Killzone, God of War, Assassin's Creed 2 Story Arch - 2 good, Brotherhood - ok, Revelation - tired, dated, a worthy end to Ezio's story but not the greatest title in the series.

Mass Effect is a brilliant case in point. 1 good, ground breaking. 2 Best in series the Empire of the Mass Effect series. 3, decent ending to the trilogy but was never going to make it out of the shadow of 2.

It is also why, IMO, there really shouldn't be more than 3 entries into a series, film or game. Most games/films start to really suck by the 4th entry and I don't know many/any films with a number higher than 5 that is still worth my money or time. Game are a little a head in this respect, a 4th or sometimes even a 5th can still be enjoyable but the fatigue can be felt, Call of Duty is a good example of this, IMO, COD4 is one of the best in the series, 5,6,7,8,9 have all have the trademarks of a diminishing experience.

This seems like the most likely way to go for another ME game. I think playing as a Drell could be really cool. If I remember correctly they were like hitmen for one of the Alien races that saved them from their dying planet?

ME has such a well thought out universe, there can be hundreds of good ideas for new games. Im amped for more Mass effect.
